iS 20w50 motor oil too heavy for our cars. I've been using it for 3 years now (castrol synthetic) and changing every 3 months (semester) , i've had no problems so far , but someone told me today that it would ruin my engine, is this true? if true which oil should I use. also should you use specific oil grades if you have certain mods.

That thick oil probably hurts your fuel economy a little, especially in the winter. Pumping the oil through the small passages in the engine will cause a pretty big drop in oil pressure if it's a lot more viscous than what the engine was deisgn to use--that could lead to problems depending on how the engine was designed.

Why have you been using such thick oil? 5W30 or 10W30 is what is recommended for the 89 engine. Since you're in a warm climate 10W30 may be a better choice as long as you're not burning it very quickly.

I'm using 5w30.. i'll go 10w30 at most..
ya i would think 20w30 is a little think, esp if your car has higher mileage, you wanna use a thinner oil

Go with 10W-30. It is a lot better with the warmer climates.

Personally I think you are fine running 20/50. I used to run nothing but 20/50 in engines with higher mileage in hotter weather. 20/50 seems like it smokes less and leaks less, but thats just my opinion. If you notice alot of the additives you buy to stop smoking or leaking, they are like syrup comming out (STP and the likes). I'm also not a big beleiver in constantly changing grades, I usually run 5-50 in the Honda just because it covers all climates and temps. You should be fine with what you have

I use 20w 50 cause of the abuse I put on the motor. Valvoline VR1 Racing or Mobile 1 Super Syn.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY'S, I know the 20 w 50 is a little too thick but I usually throw in about 3 quarts and one Lucas Oil Stabalizer,
is this O.K. I heard the oil stabalizer is good for our engines.

I love lucas oil stabizer but I found i the frezing winter lucas + 10w30 = to thick I think (1)lucas + (3)5w30 is the best for all climates winter around 5 to 30 degrees and summr 70- 100 degrees. Lucas is fairly thick
