Ok, I have an 88 Dx automatic....I topped it out at 95 mph. Thats not normal is it? I was expecting at least 110. What could it be....a dead cylinder or something??

hmm? shift to 4th? how many RPM was it at when it topped out?

I can get up to over 120, but mine's a manual. I'd say something is up.

hmmm........ a 16 year old, carburated, automatic, economy car? i'd he happy w/ hitting 95 in it. how many miles you got? you could do a full tune up and compression test if your worried the engine isn't running right.

the car has 155 k, but the engine only has 30k. I would expect more out of it.

answer my question! what was the RPM at which you topped out at 95 MPH?

yeah...i feel the same way i have a carbed dx and i only get to around 95..i feel that in the length of road i have...i should be getting a higher speed.

Same top speed for me 95, I put a new engine in my car too, so I don't know what's wrong, oh yeah, that's right, I'm too broke to properly tune it.

drknow
10-12-2003, 08:19 PM
ok, i guess that it is just normal.....ok then....time for some mods.

deadlight
10-12-2003, 08:48 PM
no, it's not normal, that means you're not even up to stock specs, I mean that I don't even have the money to get it there myself.

Wow, my lx-i tops out at 95..... it's a manual, I get to 90 in forth and that's at about 6000 rpm...then I go to 5th and just stop pulling and actually start slowing down

Where do I go for a compression test??? How much will just the test cost, and how much to get fixed you guys thing???

How much to rebuild?

Wow, that really suprises me. I have an automatic DX too and I cruise at 90 on a regular basis, hitting 95 is no problem on my 198K motor. It is definitely not a normal thing to top out at 95.

It's not normal, I've been above 110 in both my 86lx-i and my 89se-i, both auto's.

Damn, my lx-i tops out in 3rd at about 95, then I hit 4th and can get well over 110, and then I hit 5th and it pushes past 135.

Well, the problem with mine is, I hit 95 or so, shift to 4th (auto) and she just won't pull, I'm not too worried though, I'm not going to have her much longer.

i never topped out in my dx, but it used to hit 110 in 5th without a problem...

well, It might be a bad cylinder???? I think i will get one of those guages. For a compression test just get an air pressure guage and a spark plug adaptor, and then take out all of your spark plugs and put the spark plug adaptor in each of the holes and put the ignition to start and see what the reading is. I think that is how you do it anyways.

88 carbed dx hatch. and i would kick 110 in the nuts and go right on up past 115

check your timing belt its starting to slip. thats what it was for me. i was in your position once. also dont slam the gas to accellerate. i dont know how to correctly explai it but you have to feather it to shit it right and get it to shit by accelerating and then feathering the gas to get it to shit..i dunno its hard to explain.

oh and to do a compression test, goto store and buy guage, screw it into each cylinder, disconnect coil wire, crank engine for 2-3 seconds per cylinder, record compression on each cylinder and compare. not sure what `normal` is on a honda, my saab has 150-160lb per cylinder, gives a general idea.

:werd: That is where my 3rd gear tops out. I still have 4th that I can top out past that. Not much moe in 5th, stupid lack of torque.

I'd say your auto trans is slipping

Justin86
11-08-2003, 03:56 PM
Well that it is a little slow. Have you checked your air filter. That really hurts your car at high speeds.
I'm able to hit 130mph no problem.

Well I was doing about 90 today on I-5 and well my tranny blew up. Smoke and all but no visible damage to the exterior. It is stuck in 2nd and the wheels are locked.
