View Full Version : To high of an idle

Once my car warms up and idles down it idles at a consistent 1,250. I searched the board and found that normal was somewhere inbetween 800-1000. Should I turn the idle down or just leave it since winter is coming?

Just noticed the carb section, whoops, it won't let me delete my post, so if a mod wants to move it....

If its a manual, I wouldnt worry too much. But if its a automatic, that too much of a impact on teh tranny when you shift from P/N to D4 at that high of an idle.

First check for engine codes. I would also try cleaning the throttle body, that helped smooth out my idle a bit.

did you adjust the idle screws? is the idle irradic? have you considered rebuilding your carb? does the car diesel when you shut it off? the choke should make your car idle faster until the engine warms up, so your warm idle should still be at 800 or so even when its cold outside. but.... if its not dieseling... then the only thing that is going to suffer is your MPG's. your call; i would just adjust it to idle lower.

The idle isn't irratic at all, I would never spent the money to rebuild the carb on this car anyhow if it was...

Where is the screw to adjust the idle, so I can turn it down a bit...

my idle is too hi too..i keep avin to lift up on the gas peddel to get it to drop..
i just installed my ground kit and tightened my throtle cable yesterday..but now my idle is a little high..it does go down to 800 or so.. but only after i lift up on the peddle..

when is the idle screw on an fi...me and my buddy couldn't find it..

If you're lifting up on the gas pedal, you probably have a sticky choke, not too high of an idle.

Check out the howto section on tuning a carb, that should do the trick.

Could be your throttle cable, my car is doing the same. My throttle cable is stupid so I need a new one.

Your throttle cable is too tight. Loosen it. Should be about 3/8 slack.
