ok I have a 1989 Honda Accord SE-i and I notice while driving around for about 25-30mins or so or a lil less.. the EFI light comes on and stays on til I shut the car off and it resets the ECU... I looked under that panel where the L.E.D. Light would be and it flashed 17 times at a pretty quick pace.... then it stoped for about 5-10 seconds and repeatedly flashed 17 times.... Now I have no clue what the ECU is trying to tell me... so if n e 1 can help me n tell me what code 17 is I'd be greatly apreciated... Thanks... :super:

to my memory about how one would work. . .i would replace it.
the cruise control, tranny (if auto), and i think the power steering relies on that also.since it's variable speed sensitive.
with it going bad it could cause the cruise to set at a wrong speed or not set at all.
The tranny could lock the converter way later than it should , or dalay the shift's.
and the steering might not give you that road feel at hi speeds.

ok: go to pauldesign.ru and download the SHOP MANUAL, it will tell you where the speed sensor is. then, call up a local junkyard and ask for the price. there ya go.

The speed senser/speed pulser that's giving the code is part of the speedometer in the gauge assembly. I looked around in Paul's manuals and could only info i could find was a flow chart for testing with a test harness, so here's what my 88' manual has. Pretty simple test...if you consider removing your gauge assembly easy? :sad2:

The VSS is located in the gauge cluster.

YEs, the cluster is easy to remove. I can have one replaced and screwed back in in about 10 mins.

Question directly related to this thread: Author said "it flashed 17 times at a pretty quick pace", that is what mine is also doing. But reading the Chiltons it says that a Code 17 would = 1 Long Flash followed by 7 Short Flashes (versus 17 short flashes).

Mine is an 1989 Accord LXI 5 Speed.

Please advise if 17 Short Flashes is a "valid reading", as I don't want to fix something that's not broken (VSS).

Thanks in advance
