cant you just adjust the cam yourself?

You can only adjust it in one-tooth increments which is a pretty large change. The cam-gear allows much finer adjustment.

cam gears are kind of decieving. You cant really just slap them on and guess on adjustment. A lot of people do more harm them good when they put them on especially when they have DOHC VTEC motors. You can get by with a non-vtec SOHC motor, but its best to do the adjustments if you have access to a dyno to get the full performance out of a cam gear.

There is not much adjustment on a sohc but it can either help on top end or bottom end it depends on which way you go.
