Rattle and thumps

The front of my car makes a thud sound and kind of a squel when I go over bumps in the road. Im guessing its the struts but i was wondering if anyone else has any ideas what it could be before I go and buy struts.

Balljoints. If those are going bad, replace them ASAP. That's dangerous to be driving with bad balljoints.

To check them, jack the car up at the tire you want to check. Grasp the top of the tire with one hand, and the bottom of the tire with the other. Then try and move the tire back and forth, in and out (push in with the top hand and pull out with the bottom hand, then reverse and repeat, etc). If there's any play or movement of any kind, the balljoints are worn and need to be replaced ;)
