You are right, my buddies mid 76 Honda Motorcycle has them.
As for cars the oldest Honda I have ever worked on, an 80 Accord, had an electronic distributor. As for a 4th gen Civic its electronic, I guarentee it.

The 1972 date I threw out is when Ford and Mopar went to electronic. Im sure Gm was about the same time.

I challange you to find a newer example of a car with points.

Back to the original point,
It could be the distributer, cap and rotor, Something electrical. If its a good price you should go for it. Worse case senerio you have to drop a new motor in it. D15s are mad cheap and easily found.

The first thing I would do is clean up the ground wires (corrosion) and clean the positive too.

I'm not sure what points are in english but if it's this little thing that opens and closes, attached with a capacitor, then I can inform you that the "Vauxhall/Opel Corsa" had them uptill ~1991 ;) But i dunno if that's what you mean with "points"... :)

Leave it to my luck to have some random guy from half way around the fucking world to prove me wrong.
Two questions.
What the hell is a Ford Courier?
What the hell is a Ford Laser?

My opinion was based on american market cars.

Yea we have the Mazda 323.
I think the Courier is called the Ranger over here. Its a pos small pickup truck. They are everywhere. And that year of the Ranger here has an electronic distributor and Fuel injection.

Sorry to go off topic but what is points distribution??

Points is the old type of distributor that relied on a mechanical contact to fire. Electronic ignitions like on the 3g are far superior to points.
