Dunno if anyone thought of this yet, but here goes...
Why not cut the downpipe on a set of headers (Pacesetter for testing, DC for the really brave) before they merge into one pipe. From there attach a dual inlet/outlet cat. Run two catback pipes side-by-side to the rear of the car attached to this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2441422898&category=33636 Cut the muffler pipe where the two meet and attach a single can to each pipe.
Would this be of any benefit? If losing too much backpressure is a problem, run smaller diameter catback... say stock pipes.
Thoguhts?

I've been thinking about a similar idea, though I wanted to run dual separate mufflers. My intentions would be purely for looks though. I'm not really expecting an increase over say a 2.25" single exhaust, but you never know.
I had thought about running a single 2.5" straight pipe, then making a "y" where the exhaust turns then wrap my second pipe around the other side, making both pipes coming off the "y" 2.25" in hopes of eliminating any lack of backpressure issues. But we're aiming for 2 different looks. I like your idea though, just not sure if the money invested is going to be worth the power gains.

 that is so not a good idea. you need the collector for your exhaust to flow right. If you want dual exhaust, just split it towards the back end. splitting it at the header/manifold will only hurt your performance if anything. Dual exhaust is a 100% cosmetic 'mod'.

Yup. That's me. The main reason I'm looking at dual mufflers is b/c of the bumper I have my eyes on. It's got muffler cutouts on each side.

Well everyone has some correct points. What I'm going to do is run 2.25" to the gas tank. Have a Y joint then run dual 2" pipe to each side with a tip. You can either put two muffler at the end or a muffler behind the cat or what I did a muffler in place of the cat. This way you can have the look you want and still have all the benifits.

Yea it is pretty much the only way too. If you want to go bigger piping like for a turbo or something try to keep the dual pipes about 89% of what the single pipe is (2.25"<2" or 3"<2.5"

Did you ever notice that right above the original muffler location is a heat shield.... there might be a reason for that considering the gas tank is RIGHT there!!!!

:huh:The gas tank is about a foot behind the OEM muffler and the only heat shield covering the gas tank is on the front side next to the resenator.
