What is the lowest speed that everyone with manuals shifts into 5th?

I'll put it in 5th at 35 MPH if the road is really flat.

That's ONLY if I'll be going at that speed for a long time. I don't try to accelerate in 5th...lol

Well it depends on how I'm driving. If I'm just driving through town I usually shift into 5th at about 50-55 if I'm gonna be going that speed for a little while. If I'm getting on the highway or something, I usually shift into 4th at about 60, and 5th at about 70-75, lol

nah.... it doesn't hurt the car. 35 is slow if you're accelerating or going uphill. But coasting along in 5th at 35 is ok. I usually try to stay above 40 when I'm in 5th on the winding back roads (so I bend a 35mph limit).... but it doesn't hurt the car unless you hear pinging. My 87 Carb-o-rama doesn't mind it at all. Keep it in 5th as much as possible (when above 35 mph on flat roads or downhill) and you'll get excellent gas mileage. I can regularly get above 40 mpg with my 1987 with over 197,500 miles. I find that 50 miles/hour is perfect for 5th gear .... around 70 I'm wishing for a 6th gear. My brother's VW Jetta turns 3K at 60 mph!! Yikes!

Yeah, sometimes I hit 5th to up the milage. Usually 5th is about 75 for me if I'm going to be travelling at that speed for a while. I like being right in the power curve in 4th gear doing 60.
