ok, i've heard a lot of people talk about this so im looking for the details, since a need a new tranny anyway, it's a good time to swap it with the lude. What year lude tranny is it and exactly what needs to be done inorder for this tranny to work proberly in my car, i have an 88 lxi five speed.
thanks

it swaps in like a regular accord tranny... the lude and LXi trannys are very close in 1st, 2nd and third gears... 4th and 5th have higher gear raitos, so its beter for cruising at hgh speeds...

just get an accord tranny (LXi or SEi)

do you don't have to change the bell housing or anything?? it'll just drop in? and what prelude is it off of? is it the 2.0Si with the b20a5 or a different one?

It is off the 2.0SI with the A20 in it, 85-87 I belive. You can get a 83-87 carb tranny but it is more work, so just get the EFI 85-87.

i actually switched to the accord ex-i 89 i believe it is, in my prelude because i wanted higher 5th gear ratios for highway cruising. i was getting sick of the annoying bwahhhhhhhh 4500 rpm at 70mph it also gives me a higher top speed

Well the best would be use the lude gears and the accord 5th for a better top speed and better crusing. I'm still trying to pull it off.

I put an 89 Prelude SI tranni inmy 89 Lx. Its amazing to see the difference. I raced another accord 5 speed wit hthe accord tranny, and I had the preliude,. He dropped into 3rd I flored it in 4th and I was pulling on him. Its also nice when your in 5th and you put the pedal down and get amazing pickup. I went from a 18.6 in the quarter mile to a 16.5

YOu want a tranni out of a 1987 Prelude SI...same car I own!

The 1.8L tranni is a little diff I think. 1st and 2nd are taller gears on the 1.8 so go for the 2.0L PGM-FI tranni....

My car tears off the line but the only thing I dont like is 3000 RPM in 5th going 100km/h!

Top speed in my car is 228km/h at redline in 5th!

Thats a nice little gain. I'm going away for the prelude tranny and looking for something even quicker! :)

damn...i like those stats. think i'll go with it. how is the top end though?? i like doing 120 down the highway in fifth. what kind of speeds do you get with the lude tranni?

Justin86

Well you should still be able to top out around 120 maybe more with the lude 5th gear. It is a smaller gear so you will have more power in 5th then with the accord 5th but also you gas milage will go down a little. I'm keeping my 5th cause I still want the possibility of going 160mph and have better gas millage for highway crussing.

well once i get it i'll try it out. it's fun cruising that fast but not really necessary. as long as i can still go over 100 i'll be fine.

..and if you change your mind you can change the 5th gear with the tranny in the car.

Ok guys I have a 91 Prelude Si without the motor and I have the 5 speed tranny at my disposal. I was gonna sell the tranny but if I would be able to put it in my accord then hell yeah! I have a tranmission class next year that I would be able to do it in my car but I could do it this year if I wanted. Will that tranny fit? Do I just take the gears out of the preludes and put them in my accord bell housing? B/c if I use the preludes housing then I could install the ITR LSD system. But If I have to use the accords bell housing then I wouldn't be able to do the LSD setup. I'm gonna do some searching on this topic but any help would be appreciated. And Justin what tranny are you thinking about doing?

I don't belive the 91 lude tranny will work. The gears might work but ut would be something new.
The 1.8 and 2.0 Si have the same gearing but the 1.8 is a little better. look in my thread I have the gear ratios in there if you want to compare them http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27504

Thanks a lot Justin.... I found someone that wants to do a 5 speed swap so they will need all of the stuff, but I will get about $500 for the stuff. So I'm going to break even on the car which is nice.

justin, if your up to it you want to give me a brief how to on changing that fifth gear?? there's actually nothing wrong with the gears in my tranni now, except 2nd cyncro is going out, it's the transaxle that took a digger, but i figure just replace the thing since that cyncro is going out anyway.

Attention! 5th gear removal
Tools needed....10mm socket & 10mm wrench, standard screw driver to ply off cover, 1-3/16 wrench or socket or the equal in metric, a wood nail or a center punch, something to get the pin out of the 5th shift fork.
Remove the under skirt then move on to remove the 8 bolts on the 5th gear cover, this is usally painted black. Then with the tranny in gear proccde to loosen the two nuts on the end of the main and counter shaft. The mainshaft has reverse threads so be careful and the mainshaft is the one with the shift arm attached. Next you need to drive out the pin holding the shift fork to the shift shaft. Next procced to remove the gears and it help to remove the smaller gear first on the counter shaft and remember how and where the parts went!
