Removing Carbon From Top Of Pistons

In an earlier thread, someone suggested doing this:

I suggest to clean area with non-abrasvive "hand cleaner" the tops of pistons will come clean. Put some on the top of pistons let sit till the morning,the carbon then could be wiped up. What type of hand cleaner? Would liquid Dial soap work okay?

Also, my engine isn't "straight up" - it's tilted towards the front . . . wouldn't anything I put on the pistons seep down into the rings and then into the crankcase?

ge buy yourself stuff called "goof off". it will remove the carbon with one swipe.
if you have carbon build up, you may want to buy some wire brush to pun on a drill.
clean each piston at TDC (top dead center). this way it is a lot easier to clean it.

I have some of this downstairs . . . I'll try it . . .

I'll go by WalMart & get a brush for the end of my drill . . . before doing this, I think it'd be a good idea if I tape up the coolant & oil flow holes at the top of the cylinder block . . . right?

yeah, tape the coolant and oil passages.
pring each piston to TDC and clean them.

. . . after carefully scraping off all the old gasket material using a gasket scraper (bought new blades at WalMart) and then wiping the top of the cylinder block w/brake cleaner . . . I taped off the holes for oil & coolant in the top of the cylinder block . . . I got a wire brush for my variable speed drill . . . I got out my shop vacuum . . . I got my 17 year old son to hold the vacuum cleaner hose as close as possible to the wire brush . . . then I just went at it . . . I removed all the dust before moving the pistons and wiped down the exposed adjoining cylinders with a clean rag which was "lightly" sprayed w/WD40 (to pick up any dust or carbon particles) . . . like this . . .

. . . and it ended up looking like this . . . dust free . . . almost carbon free . . .
