View Full Version : Carb revs, clutch only thing to stop it.

I'm still having problems with my carb, it is even more noticeable as it is now cold.

Here is what it does. When you start it up, the fast idle kicks in, no problems, i can kick it down to around 1200 or so. It completes the first stage of the warmup fine, but when it hits the second(?) stage(where the needle is right above the C) the revs go up everytime you take it out of gear. For example, if i was in third and coming up to a stop sign, when i pushed the clutch in and put it in neutral, and let the clutch out it would rev from 1500 or so up to 3500 or so(its gotten higher in the past week as its been colder). BUT when you press the clutch in to take it out of gear and leave it pressed in, it does not rev up, once you let go of the clutch, it revs. Once you put it in, it slowly drops. Kinda fishy isnt it? Could it be the choke? It's also become very hard to start lately. Like not the first start(in the morning or after a long period), it starts fine then, but like if you start it, drive and then start it again. It cranks for a long time. I've tried giving it a little gas, no deal. When i pumped it twice before a second start i flooded it and had to wait a while before it would even think about starting. Other times its a "come on baby" and hoping you have the right amount of gas-i assume?

Once it warms up completely, the revs drop fine, and it behaves normal. Then once you stop the car and start it back up it does it again for a second(depending on how warm) and then stops. It had a new thermostat put in around 20,000 miles ago when the engine was rebuilt(by my dad and myself).

Now tonight when i got back from a party, i started it(should have still be kinda warm, sat in cold for 3 hours, after being run for awhile), it would hardly start, then bucked, and hesitated. I had to keep it in a lower gear, because lets say i was going 30 in 4th, it would buck and jump and no power. When i shifted into 3rd, there was less bucking, but still a noticable lack of power. It was also raining hard(FYI), and about 35 degrees. Also lacked in power a LOT from take off, i can usually squeal the tires(by accident) when it is that wet(and was doing it on the way over), could not on the way back. . After 5-8 mins of driving, the temp needle did not even move.

Also my dad said that the thermowax valve(thing with 2 vacuum lines attached) does not work. What exactly does this do?

Any ideas? Thanks

That used to happen to me once in a while with my stock carb on cold rainy nights, as far as the bucking and hesitation goes. It would go completely dead, I'd restart it, and then it would be fine. I'd say to look into the vac line removal because I see a possible vac line leak and it's a pain to check all of those lines. Other than that, check your choke wiring and idle settings. Try some carb cleaner too.

We adjusted the fast idle screw in the back of the carb(a pain in the ass to get to), and that did the trick. There also was a small vacuum leak, but it was not the cause of the idle mishap.

I hate carbs, one tiny little thing and it just throws it out of wack. Sean's fuel injection kit is looking more and more pleasing. :lol

3rdGen check the gas level in your float, it may be to high.
