I'll tell you what pisses me off. My god damn fast idle unloader doesn't work. The car only settles down when it warms up from driving. It runs fine for the drive, stop and shut it off, go inside, come back 10 mins. later, start it up and it sits at 3K for 5-10 more mins. I replaced spark plugs, wire, cap, and rotor this weekend. Now the damn thing sputters and hesitates while driving. It's like something is holding onto the back and lets go, then grabs again. :wtf: I'm pulling this motor in spring but what can I do until then cause it's driving me nuts. To top it off, I'm a noob at carbs. Don't know jack about them. I haven't tinkered with it since I bought the car. :stick:

Anybody have an idea what's going on? I've noticed that the car stops sputtering once the engine is completely warm. I also noticed that if I don't let it warm up a bit before I head out, the sputtering isn't as bad and doesn't occur as long. Help!!!!

you have a vacuum problem most likely, buy some carb cleaner spray ($1.50) and then with the engine cold start it up and then start shooting carb spray on the passenger side and on the rear of the carb. If you notice the idle start to smooth out at a certain spot you should check there for cracked hoses etc

Sounds like you just need to adjust the fast idle down a bit. I've done quite a bit of tweaking on the fast idle, idle, and A/C idle on mine and its finally seems all three are working in sync. depending on the outside temps, its normal for the fast idle to hang for 3-10 minutes. however, you should lower the revs on the fast idle from 3K to something like half that.

As for the sputtering, sounds like your air/fuel mixture could use some adjusting as well. Again, with a little tweaking you should be able to improve your situation. take a look at this posting http://members.fortunecity.com/accordex87/carb.htm and hopefully it will assist you in getting things back to norm ---

let me know if you run n2 any probs though - gmech.

this whole guess and check method wore me down using a carb. ADjusting every possible knob and bolt got to me after the car just died on the road and would not hold up throttle. I was like wtf????? It sputtered on me then like it was gagging or something, ran like shit, as if it was a lawnmower motor. I gave up. 300 bucks later, i found myself completing a EFI swap with the motor finally having the fun of its life idling where its supposed to. I can saw the motor was happy. But due to the harshness of the carb, i might be ditching the motor sometime next year or so.

timing issues for the sputtering and that could be why the idles screwed up too????
