Man doors are so heavy. the car sicks back at stock height without the doors. that would make for great weight reduction at the drags. anyway I'm alittle upset right now because last night and tonight the paint has not been sticking. its a little cold and the heaters are barely keeping the temperature up.

The color is Gun Metal, it has some extra Bronze pearl in it though. so i should have a nice shimmer to it in the sun light. I will be updating the pictures as I go along. I might have a couple more in a few hours. im giving this stuff time to dry!

its not so much the paint that isnt drying, it is the clear coat. Im not using the usual clearr coat and its taking WAY too long to dry. the normal stuff is dry in 2 - 3 hours air dry. this stuff has taken over 24 hours, and i put one spot under a heat lamp and it still wont cure. as I go along i will have more pictures

*Update: I just put on the first coat of Gun Metal and it stuck this time. I am only doing the Jams right now. I have one most Base coat and two clear cloats to do. I wont be able to get to the body until a little later this week due to slow curing.

are you spraying the color in the jams and then clearing it? I guess it's too late now but have you ever tried spraying the color on the jams, then doing the exterior, and then clearing the jams, and then clearing the exterior?

And I want your gun, gravity feed ownz....

MarioBurke
12-28-2003, 12:47 AM
Welp, I am done for tonight. I am gonna go get some sleep. and start some more sanding in the morning.

I couldnt spray the color in and out first because they body work isnt done on the outside. I have a shit load of sanding to do. Since we are only open Monday tuesday and wedensday this week at the shop I will probably be working on it after hours and possibly an all nighter on new years. Gravity Feed does own, but you dont want that gun. that is just a $60 gun. you want my Seta! $500...that thing owns ME!!

MAN! I have always loved your car, and wanted to see how it would look when you got it painted. Now, I am finally going to get to! :D You better be painting those tails the same color as the body! Any how, have fun finishing it up in the freezing cold! lol. Is it easy to paint your own car? Kickers car has nice paint already, but when I shave the side molding, I will prolly concider painting it myself. My cousin has a pretty good gun, but I have no experience in doing this stuff. Is it easy, just like making sure that you get the paint on evenly? Anyhow, just wonderin'? :D

If you use a single stage paint then you can make as many mistakes as you want, as many runs as you want. And you can fix it all after you're done, but this will take many hours of working it. The primer is the easiest to spray, then the paint, the clear is probably the hardest, it can be real easy to get runs. Honestly, if you don't have any experience I'd let someone do it for you. I have some experience and I'm still going to have my cousin paint my teg, that's how much I trust myself.

MarioBurke
12-28-2003, 03:12 AM
ah its all in your head. if you think you cant then DONT. Painting is not easy, its one of those things, you either have it or your dont. The hardest part for me, using Dupont paint, is painting sealer coat. it goes on before the base color and runs more than clear coat. The Clear coat is difficult to shoot at first but then you get the hang of it and its cake. Clear is also the easiest to fix. Especially during cut and buff.

Well, I am down here at the shop again. I am kinda at a stand still. I got so much going on I dont know what to do really. I have to do a lot of sanding and patch work. I was trying to swap the handles from an LX but I didnt realize you can swap the Key locks. the DX is much bigger. but i dont like the plastic handles and I dont have the key for the LX handles.

The H's are coming off the doors, the accords are staying. I am still not sure if i want to shave the trunk emblems. but I guess since I already started sanding I might as well.

Actually my plan was to leave the bumpers black. I mean it looked fine to me when I had it primer and black so I know when I get new bumpers it will look good with the gun metal. I guess it all really depends on how much paint I have when im done though. that is going to be the toughest part.

Right now I am just putting the doors back on and some interior trim, so I havent gotten much further. oh and the paint is worth well over $500 with all the metal flake and the pearl. I got it for $89.

12-29-2003, 03:01 AM
I can. because I have to buy brand new bumpers first. that is going to be over 200 alone even with my Honda Discount. right now its cold as a mother fucker and I dont think i will be doing any painting tomorrow. we just got like a foot and half of snow! we just spent all night doing reverse donuts and throwing snow balls, and un suspecting walkers. (seriously why are you walking your dog at 12:30 in the morning) as far as paint goes I dont know what to do. I think black bumpers look nice. they already look nice with the primer. But I will see how this metal covers and try to save some for bumpers. the thing is with pearls, it is impossible to match them two times. and I dont think the guy gave me enough to do the bumpers. anyway i'll keep updating this!

Use the LX handles then, and just get new door lock cylinders. They will come with new keys, and arent very expensive.

And I think you should try your hardest to paint the bumpers the same colour as the rest of the car, it would look 100 times better. And why would you need new bumpers? just primer and paint them.

oh man i hope he paints under the hood and firewalls and stuff becuase that would be 2 colors that would clash like no other.

Actually the Orginal color of the car is The Burgandy Maroon Color and it really accents the Gun Metal well. Unfortunely I am having a lot of problems right now. I jammed everything, but I did not do under the hood of the engine bay. I dont think i got enough paint. and its kinda hard to just ask for more when it was just given to me. I mean Dupont is some of the most expensive shit you can buy.

I ran into a problem right now. all the primer that is on my car rattle can, and i guess the sealer coat is too strong and wrinkles up the enamel from the rattle can. so I have to go back and sand through two coats of primer to get back to the maroon color. I have a picture of it but I took it on Terrys camera and its too cold and snowy to go outside to his car. tomorrow should be a short day at the shop so I have most the after noon and all night to fix all the little small dings and dents and sand off all the primer. If all goes well I should be looking being done this weekend.

IF i had the time to pull the engine completely and clean the bay, I would paint it. but I dont have a week to set aside.

buzzbomber88lx
12-31-2003, 08:19 AM
you can always paint it later man. it still looks awesome the way it is and unless you have a lot of problems then you dont have to worry about even pulling the hood release....except to change oil and stuff.

MarioBurke
01-02-2004, 01:20 AM
damn I wish i had a body kit to go with my car. Gun Metal on a body kit would look sick.

well it kinda depends on what colors you like. I can give you advice on some really cool colors. for instance if you like blue, check out the 98 Toyota Camry Night Shadow blue. it is a real sleek dark dark blue, with green and magenta pearl. it would kill on an angular car like this.

right now I am not too happy with it. There are a lot of sand-thrus showing and I only had enough sealer to cover the car, not double over. I am some what of a perfectionist, but I am kinda screwed now because I dont have more time to work on it.

Next step, nib sand some of the dirt and cover some sand-thru marks. Start base coat of Gun Metal.

one custom Gun Metal 3rd Gen. Jigga yeah the trim is still black. I am repainting them with an OEM black we use on all the car that come in the shop. nice slick flat black. and I am getting new bumpers and leaving them black. in sticking with old school.

Bondo and filler doesnt work. I tried it on the last set of tail lights and the tails just stick out too far to really do much with them. although it really helped with trunk rattle.

so im excited now. just gotta let it dry and hopefully start putting shit back together soon. aight been another long day. that wraps it up until the cut and buff which i probably wont be able to do until next week.

well mine was actually a custom mix, we just used the gun metal as a starting point. As far as coverage goes, if you are doing the jams, under the hood, under the trunk, and bother bumpers it takes two coats reduced 1 to 1. since I didnt do the bumpers I just threw down 3 coats and when it dried it gave it a real nice and dark color. if your using Dupont make sure you use the VS6. i wanted to go darker and use VS7 but i didnt have any.

ok, but what amount did you use, just one gallon of it? is it acrylic enamel, basecoat/clear, or what? mine is acrylic enamel, and i got it for free as well, if yours was acrylic enamel, what all did you use to mix it??
thanks a lot

I know you did not just say that. for your sake I hope so. I have been gonna let that slide for now.

I didn't mean to offend you. Here in Idaho, your car looks like the back of a horse trailer. That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the back of your car. That's why I don't like them. I want your front lip though, that's tight, the color of paint makes your car look like a million bucks, a big props for doing it yourself. I can't wait to see it in person.

Yeah, I LOOOOOVE marios's tails :D. But you know, everything above DX had painted bumpers, so I think it would look fine there mario! Also, those tail lights aren't stock, that is kind of like making the car something it's not (a corvette maybe? :D ) Yeah, I would paint the bumpers, it would look so much better there homestar!

if anything it looks more like a school bus. Horse trailors dont use LED brake lights. except the real new ones. i get what your saying, you just have to see it in person. the pictures dont do justice.

this is very true. that was a bad example. your just missing the simple concept though. its about being original. lots of people tint their tail lights red or black. why not change them completely (to corvette style). lots of cars shave emblems and marking; why not move them around......and Everybody likes to paint there bumpers and moldings.....you get where im going. my bumpers were matched with the car too and its just more paint that got chipped up and ugly. like i said, i'll decide when I GET the bumpers.

what this is all about is going from concept:

just pretend the bumper is there still.

might as well though this one in there too for the rest of you.

guess i shoulda read the previous posts. ...I didnt think mario was that close to getting his car done.....hey mario, did you shave the back end on your car? I like that idea of shaving the tails like that.

KEEP THE BUMPERS BLACK. Mario, i like where you're going with this. It'll be about show quality if you keep going with it in the direction you are. If you turboed that baby, that would be THE sickest 3G around.

what new picture. those other two pictures were both photo shopped 10 months ago. I was just showing how close I came to replicating my concept.

Yeah I was up till 3 on friday morning painting it, and then took a nap got up ran around town for a bit picking up odds and ends. then I pulled the tranny out of my brothers car and then got back at mine at 9:30pm putting it back together and gotdone with everything around 10 am sunday morning. went home took a shower and got back on my brothers transmission.

I did not get to shave the back end though. since I cant weld and I cant get any body to do it for me (Andrew) I had to settle for leaving the tail lights where they were. I still dont have bumpers yet, and I got pulled over last night already. but i talked him out of a ticket.

man, if you coulda got ahold of a welder, i woulda (somehow) done it for ya. Im fairly handy with the welder (good enough for body work). but even w/out the shaving, it still looks good. I dont know if i said this earlier but, im not a big fan of those tails, but the rest of your car is badass so i'll forgive ya..... ;) j/k

yeah I got pulled over for not having the back bumper. but i didnt want to put it on because of those fatty holes i cut in it a while ago. lol

hey sorry I missed this one. Yes it only took 1 gallon of paint, but I am using the Urethane paint so it lasts longer. I used:

1 quart VS6 Sealer
1 gallon urethane basecoat (reduced 1/1 with)
1 gallon 7175 mid temp reducer
1 gallon 438- Clear coat
and some activators

i did all the jambs EXCEPT under the hood and I have maybe a quart of paint left. Somewhere around there? and for clear I have almost half a gallon left. I dont know why i put some nice coats on.

My favorite yard charges $1 to get in. Its well worth it. They have wheelbarrels, port-a-johns, handwashing station, all the cars are raised up in the air, and they have set prices on everything so no price gouging. You will pay the same for a BMW, Hyundai, Honda, or a Jaguar part. Oh yea and at any given time they have 2 dozen 3Gs  .

Yeah the big one here in Houston is like that but it's $2 to get in plus an extra $1 to get in the late model section (1990 and up) although I've never seen anything past a '94 in there and those are usually Hyundai's. Usually every part there sells for about 10% of new so that's not too bad.

Vinny's got the best one though....They actually let him take his CAR in there! But I'm sure Vinny is an honest person and would never load his trunk up w/ freebies. :D

ehhhhhhhhhhhhh they quit letting me drive back there. Owner said too many shops are going back there and taking excessive amounts of stuff, go fig. Anyways now they just let me walk back there with my tool bag and I can always go out to my car if I need anything else as far as tools and stuff. They are pretty cool. Of course their prices are a bit on the high side but I still go there just because I can actully roam free and get my own stuff. I usually roam around for a few hrs one or 2 Saturdays out of the mth to see if they have anything new on or anything I may need later on

THOSE BASTARDS! I guess ya knew it was coming one day. Oh well. Some of those guys don't play at the pick-a-parts. I see guys rolling their acetylene torch setups, some with gasoline powered compressors to run air tools. They've got it down to a science almost.
