my friend told me that a gear reduction starter is good. like when you have low exhaust back pressure or something. maybe for high compression engine? ok, well his 300ZX came with one stock. we dropped the motor in that about 3 weeks ago. that was one of the easiest motor transplants ive helped with. anyway, there seems to be 2 different starters for the 3gee. there is the Mistsuba one, which i think mine might be, that looks like a standard starter. then there is the Denso one. that one looks like a gear reduction starter. anyone know about that? just wondering, never know when i might need to replace my starter.

Gear reduction starters provide more cranking torque out of a smaller motor that consumes less amperage than conventional gear direct starters. Most starters nowdays (that I've seen anyways) are gear reduction, for the exact reasons I mentioned above. Even big trucks and high compression engines can use relatively small starters thanks to gear reduction

And you are correct:
Mitsuba = gear direct
Nippondenso = gear reduction
