you're causing air to get sucked out when you open the sunroof which then pulls in air from the engine bay (gasoline smell) or from the trunk space (exhaust smell)

i don't smell anything around the engine bay, but i do smell something around the fuel filler. do you think it is the fuel filler pipe? i know our cars had recall on them.

Yeah i had that problem to. But i took my back seat out. and i saw a small area with gas and a screw in the middle of it. The previous owner was dum cuz he had this as a ground for his system. when i took the screw out it was right in the gas tank and shit. i was like shit. so i just got expoxy and sealed that shit up. Luckying when i was crusing i didnt GO KABOOOOM. lol.

well, the rust on this car is bad.it is all rusted out around the filler pipe. it still has some metal, so i am going to use some convert to rust spray paint and some apoxy to fix the hole around the filler pipe. i checked the filer pipe, and it looks fine. i think is because the body is rusted the fumes are comming out from filler pipe, through the rusted body and into the car.

hmm....... we had a car (300ZX) that had really bad rust spots behind the front wheels that were causing fumes to get in. we just took the wheel off, grinded the rust off, pop rivited a steel plate over the gap after we bent it to fit right, bondoed or something over that, and the sealed it with this like under carriage goo.

make sure the covers are on the fuel tank, there are 2 right behind the rear seat, if not that check around your engine bay for signs of leaking fuel (dirty around injectors, fuel rails, etc)

i checked under the hood right after i drove the car for 45 minutes, and there are no signs of any fuel leaks. i just changed the o-rings on injectors and i know they are not leaking.
i am leaning toward the fuel filler.

remove your wheel well lining on the driver side rear tire and see if you can find anything leaking off of your fuel filler line or any of the vaccum lines attached to it.

Also how is your banjo/crush washers on your fuel filter and the fuel pump?

How are the fuel lines in the engine bay and the Fuel return lines?

I noticed a stong gas smell under the wheel well when replacing my stuts a few months back. I inspected the filler neck and the tank but could find nothing. I was a bit stumped myself. Let me know if you find the culprit Alex.
