Hi, everyone I'm new here and I gotta say this place is kick ass (excuse my french). Anyways so I decided to post my first thread. My 89 accord LX takes forever to start in mornings or whenever it has not been running for a while. I know this probaly one of the easiest thing to fix. I use that engine starting fluid now so I wont damage the starter. I know it could be the distributor or the ignition coil right. What other things I can do to fix this problem. Or is there a checklist to find the problem? Oh, and it only has 117,000 miles which is pretty good right? Well thats about it.

Damn 117,000 miles is very good for a 3g. How long have you had it? Did you just buy it?

i don't mean to sound stupid as hell but i'll take a shot.
you have to press the gas once to start it.
if u do that then something to do with a fuel problem.

I had my car for almost a year it had 103400 miles then. Yes, If I dont used the engine starting fluid I have to pump the gas while cranking to get it to start. But either way I get it to strat it revs 2000-3000 rpm. No matter how far or how long I drive it. It always rev high when put it in park.

Spark plugs + wires, cap and rotor, out of timing, clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter, pcv valve clogged, carb is out of tune, vacuum leaks. The list goes on and on.
Do you have PGMFI (LXi, SEi, EXi) or a carb (DX or LX)?

if it rev's high all the time, try adjusting the throttle controller.
there's two of them one's in the front on the pass side of carb.
the main one is behind the carb.

Check the list of things Kroy listed. if you already did the cap/rotor/wires, then you might as well change the spark plugs. How old is your battery? That could be causing a problem. Is the ground wire to your starter solenoid connected tight? try cleaning the terminals on that, and on your battery. That might help.

you might be having a bad fuel delivery. Change your fuel filter both the primary and secondary and then try using a full fuel system cleaner in the gas tank when its almost empty and see how it goes. Carbs are a pain in the ass to start up cause they need to be warmed up or what not. Thats why i had my days with a carb and now im EFI. much easier and much more reliable for my motor.

IF your fuel pump filter is clogged you need to replace it/ clean it. HOw is the inside of the gas tank? any rust?

Hey i think its because I have a broke thermovalve on the intake manifold

Check your accelerator pump. It may be failing. You should see gas squirt into the carb when you depress the accelerator while looking into the throat of the carb. The fast idle could be caused by the broken thermovalve.
