PCV and black box thing

What does the PCV do? and, what is the plastic black box underneath it that has a tube stemming up and parallel to the pcv valve? what does that do? do i need it?

Yes you need the box... it keeps oil from going directly into the hose for the PCV Valve.

The PCV vents blowby gasses, basicly gasses that slip past the piston rings and enter the crank area below. Positive Cranckase Ventilation
