I say change your thermostat in the cooling system. Its probably seized in the open position not allowing your car to funny warm up. Try that first, its a routine maintaince $5 part. If its not that then it is probably a bad sensor. Does your heat work?

Check your coolant level first...
Make sure the wire is still connected to the sensor on the back of the intake manifold.

There's a sensor on the intake manifold? I thought on was on the back of the block?

Would be a good time to invest in a 86-89 Accord Manual, I may look it up in a little while if I get off the computer, the manual is $10 USD at any parts store... You didn't mention if the car was running poorly? Does everything run properly except the gauge?

I say replace the thermostat to start, its cheap.

yeah i've been getting gas almost every day 3-5 dollars worth... thats alot compared to my old car which only had a 1.8, but then again, it was a stick. Anyways, yeah I've noticed the bad gas milage too.

just go buy a new thermostat asap make sure you point the "non spring side" towards you when you put it back in, this is probably your problem, and its bad for your car to run cold and it give you TERRIBLE gas mileage. i just fixed mine finally i put a honda OEM on in there much more substantial than the ones at an auto store...

for the oem gasket and thermostat it only cost $16, its alot cheaper than buying gas all the time... warm car! and better preformance

anyone have a link to the thermostat i need? i'll get one today before i go to work but i won't be able to put it in until tommorow. you think i'll be ok? it seems like my car doesn't get any power either... could that also be a problem? it's hard as hell for me to get my car past 90mph.

why are you going 90?

Fix one thing at a time...
anywho your milage problem might be linked to an ignition problem or a carb vacuum leak... or a slightly loose booster venturi... which might explain the hard time getting past 90, but a loose booster usually would mean less gas is used which means your low gas milage is just the factor of you driving too fast... :D

If the manifold and carb heater is working properly, you should get better milage in cold weather. Someone suggested a 192/195 thermostat I believe for the cold weather. The ones I see in autoparts stores are made by stant I think... or maybe that was just for the radiator caps. Just ask the person at the counter for the part #.
