The Gold is the original paint that was starting to flake off, the grey is primer, the black is burnt primer from sanding, and the Shiny part is hard to see in these pics but its gonna look sweet when I am done.

I keep breaking sanding discs and I think I am going to run out so I'll probably finish it this weekend. I love my generic JCPenny's rotary tool.

i think a painted valve cover is one of the easiest things to do to make ur engine look better.

Thanks Travis, I'll pick one of those up in a few days.
I like the look of polished over painted, just my style I guess.

If you want polished, you'll need an aluminum valve cover.

steel can be polished !!!! you need to do the following :
1. degrease
2. strip off all the paint
3. sand from 100-600 grit wet and dry (maybe go to 1000 grit )
4. clean
5. get a sisal buff, load it with black emery compound( i use supper sisal )
work that to you start to get a semi shine .. this is the longest part this step.
6. take a sprial load it with tripoli brown compond
at this step you will start to get you nice shine going ( this step cuts and shines )
7. take a loose cotton buff and load it with white compound and work it til you got that mirror look ( i use a sprial buff to do this part from side to side )
8. this is optional : replace the losse with another loose load it with red compound and this will bring out a nice shine ....
9 reinstall ( clear coat is a op...i wax it with a good carunba wax or i use zoop on it )

when polishing .. the better you sand the better the look ... use 1 buff for 1 compound do not mix compounds on 1 buff. use a new one each time ... clean part when changing compounds .... and the what i do for paint removal is toss it in the bead blaster ... air craft stripper with work to ... time to do one valve cover .. prep : 1-2 hrs polish 1hr i have done many steel parts ... and when you are done you get that chrome look .......i will do a post on polishing and i will post alot of tips for this as i can .... i got a 89 accord 4 dr that is is the works now ... i have done many project car's show car's quads motorcycles ... even a few aero crafts ,,,, so if you need to know about the polishing game .. let me know i will help as much as i can ....

Out of curiousity....When re-installing the cover & gasket....Do you have to apply anything to the gasket first? I'm getting conflicting stories from different Honda dealerships here! One says apply nothing & install "DRY", while another says use a a contact sealant on the sides to afix the gasket to the cover first & then install it on the engine??? What did you end up doing?

HondaBoy

you can install the gasket dry, that is if its new. if its not brand new put the gasket maker sealant on it. but really i'd say put sealant on any way just to make sure.

Use a sealant that is ok with oil. And don't put too much on the surface b/c it could squeeze out and get inside the crankcase and possibly do more damage.

And just as a side thought, most people do not know that when they change their oil in a Honda that they have to change the drain plug gasket. It's a plastic gasket that is designed to be crushed into place and can only be used once. You can get them at Napa for about a dollar. I found this out and did it and bam, no more oil drips on the driveway. Most people don't know that and I figured I would share that info in here.

the drain plug gasket....this I am assuming goes around the drain plug? I am glad you said something...I was going to change my oil tomorrow. Thanx for the info.
