Me and my friend spent 6 hours at his machine shop today, but with the help of some computer operated machinery I now have an adjustable cam gear. I was amazed it came out looking just as good as the ones you see for sale. I could not find one for sale anywhere wich is why I went through all this hassle, but it's nice to have a one of a kind part on my car. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.

It is a cam gear? that is adjustable by the degree?

yeah it's a cam gear, it drives the camshaft. It has 6 locking bolts that run through slotted holes so you can adjust you cam timing back and forth +10 or -10 degrees. It helps dial in aftermarket cams and set your powerband to where you want it. They are not very usefuel on stock or lightly modded motors (like mine) but once you start adding a bigger cam or milling the head, turbo, things like that you can really make nice gains or smooth out your powerband. It's hard to set them without a dyno because usually for all the power you gain at a certain rpm you lose power somewhere else so setting it just seat of the pants you might think your car is faster but it's hard to tell. It's really a trade off, where you set it usually depends on you driving style.

Post those pics ASAP. What were the specs and did you save them.
again awesome.

The really hard part was programming all the specs into the computer. The actual cutting of the wheel was easy, the machine did it with no problems. I would say 1 hour of it was acual machine work and about 5 hours of math and computer programming. It was tough to program the drill to cut all the adjustment holes at an angle. I'm not sure if we saved the specs, but I do remember most of the numbers. I'll try to get the pic up today.

Wow! It looks exactly like that, almost exactly. I don't really need to get a pic up now but I'll try anyway. It even has the 6 big holes in it to cut down the weight. The only difference is we used the the center section out of the old cam gear and bolted an aluminum plate over it. The adjsuting holes are the same, we used the old gears teeth like in your pic. We could have made the entire gear from aluminum but I didn't feel like being there all day. But really it looks just like the one in the pic. Did you make that gear yourself?

I did tell my friend that if it came out nice there might be other people who might want one, and once he programmed everything into the computer it would be easy to duplicate but I'm really not sure if he's interested in acutally producing stuff. He really wanted to use my car as guinnea pig before he made them for his supra. I haven't even put it on my car yet, but after I do and it works (I'm sure it will) I'll ask him if he might want to whip up a couple more. I know it's really frustrating finding stuff for this car, I'm having a hard time sourcing parts and am making a lot of custom parts for it. I guess thats what makes it fun, something different.

I put it on my car when I did my cam the week before last. It works good. Now it's time to go dyno. It looks like they have a group buy put together on cam gears anyway. It would probably be best to get one from a professional rather than my friend. If that doesn't work out he said he might make a batch.

I heard some where you can use a F22 cam gear. I eye balled my A20 gear to my brothers F22 and it looks pretty damn close. There is a guy on Accord Tuner that has one on his A20.

I thought about an f22 cam gear but I'm pretty sure the one I saw had 42 teeth and the a20 had 44 teeth if I remember correctly. Once I thought about using a cam gear from another car but I think the chances for it to work would be pretty slim.

I also install new cam gears to my lude(B20A1). Gears are made by Tommi's Billet.

It does sound like you did something that's not easy to do.

As for cam gear availability though, check out http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?t=19334&page=9&pp=20

What was your machining time and what do you charge for an hour of machining? Did u both use a CNC or just a regular digital mill and lathe?. I really would love to see the product and how much you guys would roll out each month in your spare time. I might not buy one yet because i dont have an aftermarket cam with a longer duration so im still out of the loop :(

No this is what he told me. So yesturady I found an F22 cam gear and took some notes. The teeth spacing is the same but the F22 is 3/32" smaller in diameter which means two less teeth. Now having a gear with smaller diameter, wouldn't that mess up the valve timming pretty bad? I'm going to talk to him to see if he can take a pic of the gear and get some measurment to see if its not actually an A20 gear.
