is it the muffler that makes the low sound? the entire exhuast system? the piping?

muffler and engine...but the higher raspier sound is cause by what you have done to your piping,cat,headers

Everything makes a difference as far as the sound go's. Intake, Header, exhaust, all add sound. Full exhaust is your best bet.
