View Full Version : fast blinkers, the cheap way.

i found out how to make your car have fast blinkers without even buying anything. i havent done it, but my friends dad used to work for a company that did it.

86ACRDLX

i dont have anything to show, but i can kinda explain how, the "flasher chip" has 3 connections, im not sure which one because you need to know a litle about wiring and stuff, because you have to connect the to wires that touch when the bulb goes low. when the bulb goes low the blinkers go faster, so you need to find which wires they are and connect them.

86ACRDLX
02-11-2004, 12:01 PM
i didnt get to talk to his dad so i dont know exactly how, but thats what you need to do, open up the flasher chip and connect those two, i would suggest picking up one from the junkyard to test it on first, because they are like 12 bucks at the store

NXRacer
02-11-2004, 12:07 PM
its just tricking the flasher module to think there is a lower voltage use on the circuit then normal. You can also take out a bulb from somewhere and it does the same thing.

86ACRDLX
02-11-2004, 12:08 PM
but it works...... and you dont have to take out a bulb.

BITESIZE
02-11-2004, 12:13 PM
You just have to trick the relay.

soljaboy2000
02-11-2004, 12:22 PM

86ACRDLX
02-11-2004, 12:29 PM
like i said, pick up a couple to try it out with, and if it screws up at all, you have the back up or a new one. so this way you dont mess up anything.

SteveDX89
02-11-2004, 12:35 PM
Why don't you buy a resistor at radio shack and splice into one of the wires somewhere?

86ACRDLX
02-11-2004, 01:00 PM
because the point is,, this is the cheapest way, but i havent thought of that yet, cuz i dont really know too much about cars or wiring, but im learnin!

erics86dx
02-11-2004, 01:06 PM

86ACRDLX

its up in the dash, when you turn on the blinkers, you can hear it clicking. and yeah i know what the hell im talking about.

Ha Ha Ha Ha, everbody takes me too seriously all the time.

Here's what you do, take out the relay and figure out what you need to do with it in order to get it to relay faster, with resistors. Look in the wiring diagrams and see how many ohms the resistors are. Resolder some new resistors in and bam you have a faster relay.

The little color codes on the resistors are there for a reason. The first two colors are multiplied by the last color code. Here's some examples....

(color?)= red, blue, orange, silver, gold....and so on...each color means a different ohm.

(color? 1, color? 0) is 10 times (color? 10k ) = 100 ohms clear up to like (color? 2, color? 0) is 20 times (color? 1,000k) = 20,000. These ohms resistors are at radio shak, I'm sorta pulling this outa my ass, so some one correct me please.

Your a dumb fuck bitesizzle...........if you go around connecting wires together (fast blinker shit) that are not supposed to be connected then your kinda defeating the purpose of fuses.

I'm not going to do it, that dudes going to do it and if he blows his car up, then we'll know not to do it. (If you don't know what you are doing than don't do it).

Me a "dumb fuck" ? I don't think so... You won't short anything out with fuses. The fuses will pop, if they are overloaded. If you have everything hooked up right. I don't car what you say. I'm studying electronic engineering right now in college. I know what I'm talking about just a little.....So wah wah wah.

All that will be done, is trying to get the relay to switch faster than stock.......That's why you read the wiring schematic and figure out what you need to do before just connecting wires together like you were saying. :argue2:

Why do you want fast blinkers anyway. Bitesize, do you know how the flasher circuit works or are you guessing? Unless you are changing an r/c circuit with that resistor you're talking about, it won't work. I'm asking this because I don't know what the flasher circuit looks like.

The relay is a little switch that goes back and forth, thus turn signals, the power goes on and off on and off on and off. Just get that switch to go faster. "and I'm not a dick" you're just a newbie. Ha ha ha

STFU all ;)

fast blinkers are ricey, lets not worry about going out of our way to perform this pointless modification.

pretty soon we will have the APC fast blinker light chip/relay mod on every autozone in america. :(

BITESIZE

Maybe there is a chip inside the relay that would have to be reprogrammed in (MS) milliseconds over again........I could do it at school maybe with the Bascom program....:)

Here's your answer to the fast blinker question. The turn signals and emerg flashers are controlled by the ICU Integrated Control unit. This device controls the timing of the relay that switches the power on and off for turn sigs and e flashers. It also controls oil warning light flasher, Seat belt beaper timing, ignition switch light on timer and lights left on warning beaper. The ICU is located below the heater console near the ashtray. If there is a trick to changing the speed of flashing it would have to be done internally. I'm sure you don't want to mess with this unless you know what you're doing. They cost more than $12 bucks for sure. New I would guess $200

Hope this helps

ok guys since he doesn't know how, I do. you just need a soder iron, 2 4-6" wires, and a adjustable petometer (I think thats how its spelled)

All under $5

I can do it for you or you will have to do it yourself. I can provide a link for the how to but I have to find it first.

*edit* ok I found it, didn't want to wait a whole minute to repost.
How to make your own adjustable hyperblinker (http://www.andrews.edu/~johnsonm/howto/hyperblinker.html)

*edit* I can do it for you if you are not sure about doing it yourself. I have over 10 years of sodering experience. Also I can make it to look like what the pictures show, nice and clean.

Magny
02-11-2004, 04:56 PM
Also I have done this to my relay and haven't had a problem with them for over a year and a half. so knowing that its pretty safe to do this without worrying about popping fuses. I can do it for you in no time. If you want me to do it, I can. As soon as i recieve it, I will start working on it right away, then reship it out the same day. takes about 10-15 mins with one of those relays.

*EDIT*
PM me if you would like to ship it to me and get it worked on. Just need a $20 cover charge to cover the shipping cost.

Alright kids, stop with the fighting and get back onto the topic.

I have gotten my boxes in, my tape should be coming in a few days. If anyone would like to get their blinker relay modified to be an adjustable hyperblinker, pm me. It will blink like stock at the lowest point to about 50 times a second to where its constantly on. It can be adjusted to your taste level of how fast you want it to blink. It even blinks faster than the rally racers blinkers. I have over 10 years of sodering experience straight out of high school, so you can guarrante that it won't look hella crapy and shitty. I can also make it where you can adjust it anywhere you want, the hoodliner, dash, console, etc.. just tell me how long you want it to be, or if you have a LX you can tell me where you want it and I'll make it to size. I have an 86 accord LX so I can pretty much know that the others are the same distances, just that you need to route it yourself once you get it. It doesn't bother me that I have to reach way under the dash to adjust my blinkers cause I rarely change it. Just to show off that I have an adjustable is when it changes, but I put it back afterwards. Just take it from me, once you set it you will love it, and won't want to change it.

PM me if you have questions.

I was just thinking about about changing all my taillights to LEDS and wanted to know can this be apllied only to the rear turn signals. I dont want the front turn signals to blink fast cuz I have those blue xenon bulbs or whatever and they're not that cheap and I dont wanna blow those. I like the way they blink also cuz you see the blue more.

why modify the flasher relay? do what i did. you know the double filament bulbs in you brake light? well they have 2 contacts on the bottom of the bulb. i got those and put them so the dim filament comes on. had to fool with it a bit. thats working for me, didnt cost much anything.

You wont blow the bulbs, trust me, I "had" those on (hence the word "had", someone stole them from me. I should superglue the casing next time lol) and they worked fine. They wont blow unless you up the wattage range, the only thing that is getting replaced is the resistor for an adjustable one. To get the rear to blink fast and not the front, you need to modify the wiring and the relay casing where all the fuses are to have an additional blinker relay(a second one for the front only) other than that it all runs off the same relay.

Totally different circuit. All the timing is done in the ICU behind the ashtray. The relay is just a standard relay. Must be different on 86-87

No, I know which one it is on those relay. I have access to files like that. It will work. Just need to look it up and find out which one it is. If I can't do it I'll send it back with the cover charge.

so right now there is only one stock relay for the blinkers? where is it located?

turn your hazards on and listen for the sound, without the engine running, and you will find it. Ususally with the fuse box, but some cars are different. then you gust grab it and pull the 2 side tabs (if it has it), and pull those outward to unlock the relay and pull the relay out.

Are you saying that it's not controlled by the ICU? If so my manual is incorrect. I looked at the schematic for my 89 and it shows that the flasher circuit is in the ICU. I'm not going to do this with mine but I am curios about this.

fast way to do fast blinkers all around is to remove your front bumper turn signals. i had to do this to mine when i put the bodykit on. it works great and they look great too. i just rewired the front corner lights so all the lights blink including the parking lights. the front corner lights have 2 sets of lights, side signal, and parking light. plus im in the process of changing the side mirrors to the ones with turn signals in them also....so that adds some front signal lighting.

P.S. if you want to retain your front turn signals, but want a fast blinker, just disconnect the front turn signals and rewire them to the side blinkers.

hmm, dunno about the wire thing tho ICEMAN, but to get ot to your taste of blinking speed, its better to get the adjustable. doing it that way would be a possibility of a electrical fire of done wrong.

as for you, blkblurr, it isnt connected to anything but the power lines from the distribution block and the ground. the only thing controlling your blinker is its own relay. you can easily remove this and ollow the wires from the panel and see where they connect to. I've never heard of a blinker relay connected to an ICU.

nope, had it for almost 7 months this way now, no probs. try unplugging the front turn signals and see. you still have your sidemarker signals and your hazard is at normal speed. besides, i dont really care for fast blinkers. it's just that that's what i have right now since i had to unplug the front turn signals. my new turn signals would be the side mirrors. not the ones you buy for a civic, but custom made with LED's. inside the mirror itself and out facing the front. the ones inside the mirror is easy, just cut some plexiglass or regular glass and tint it with heavy mirror tint. the LED's are bright so they show through the tint when they are lit, no problem. im also doing front headlight projectors also with some plexiglass and fiberglass fabrication using 2 sets of PIAA projector driving lamps. very bright indeed. i wont have high beams but this car is not going off road nor is it driven on non-lit roads.

I did that when I first had the car, and it didn't seem to go any faster, plus it was awfully slow. Once I found out how to make it go faster, and very cheap to do, I went for it and I had this for over 2 years and haven't had anything wrong.

All you have to do is put in an 1157 LED bulb in replace of the 1157 bulb and BINGO!

you got 2X flashers!
