yeah, a while ago i had my head gasket go on my 89 accord dx. i replaced the head gasket, and had to replace the head also. I got a rebuilt one, but it was from a 89 lxi, but they said it would be the same. but now ever since i put it back together, there is this loud popping when i let off the gas. Its pretty much a backfire. But it only does it sometimes. Any one know what this would be? please help
thanx

i say you may want to check your timing.

I ask a question similar to this earlier but got no definite response. Everytime I let off the gas and engine brake I get lots of popping noises.. mainly it sounds like its out the muffler but it seems more like a backfire out the carb... nothing maj0r, just sputtering popping noises. I noticed race cars do it on TV and some other hondas, but mine does it excessively. Anyways, I was told thats just the way it is..... nobody knows why.... but there has to be an explanation... I thought timing was off but even after I advanced my timing it still does it..... so does anyone have a definite explanation? Althought it sounds cool, I don't think its supposed to be doing it hahaha......

an exhaust leak, a vacuum leak, incorrect valve/ignition timing can cause this.

I know mine does the same thing like when i am gearing down and stopping.. thats cuz it's carbed.. and carbed engines do that.. if it were efi... it wouldn't do that...well maybe it would abit.. but not like the carbs

I agree with the timing analysis. The only time my engine did this was when I had it advanced too far and the plugs I was running were too hot. If you run your ignition advanced, try a lower heat range plug. The popping sound is the backpressure changing in the motor.

on my other car, which is ECI-FI it does this...what happened was an injector got dirty and leaned out one of the cylinders...thusly i burnt and/or warped a valve or damaged a ring.....now that the injector is clean the mixture is way to ritch and the unburnt fuel is ignited by the heat of the exauhst pipe.....sputtering.....you have a dx right? try timing, vacum, mixture screws and all that.....do you have an A/F guage? your probably running a little ritch...does it just
sputter? or a real good backfire?

yeah it does sputter a lot when im at a lower rpm, but if im like in third gear and about 3500 or 4000 rpm and just let off the gas completely, it hesitates for a second, and then boom. it doesnt do it all the time though. Just sometimes. It really annoys the hell out of me.
