Well this ones gone round and round and I'm curious now as to who's will and who's won't start unless you push the clutch in. I know on 4 accords I've owned all of them start whether the clutch is in or out, doesn't matter either way. I've even changed the switch with 3 I grabbed from the junkyard. Whether your car does or doesn't please post what year car you have so we can figure out what years/models will or won't start without pushing the clutch in.

I've got an 89 DX coupe and I have to push the clutch in start it. It won't even turn over if I don't push the clutch in.

I think your clutch sensor is messed up if it does that. Somethings wrong with that.

Yes, mine starts without pushing the clutch in. In fact, I'm so used to just getting in the car and starting it up. I don't know how many times I've left it in gear parked on a hill, and totally forgot about it when I started the car up. Which leads to some surprise unpleasantries.

Ok i am sitting in the driver's seat, I see a brake and gas pedal. There's supposed to be a third pedal? Phew you guys have some weird cars! :D

My 88 starts up without engaging clutch. I also have been known to start in gear and get that embaressed look on my face and hope that no one saw what I did.

Neither of my two 5spd accord would start w/o the pedal depressed. My first thought would be a bad switch because that is what controls it. I could see if you did a 5spd swap from an automatic.

my new hatch had a working switch, but i bypassed it so i can hook up my autostart.. just have to leave it in N and keep the e brake on... if not, my car will go for a ride without me even around :D lol

plus its a pain when your sittin sideways and just wanna start it when your workin on it.. i dont have to get up on the lift and get in to start, just grab the key and turn

I'm going to go try mine again. I know it needs to have the clutch pushed in but I want to try it without it pushed in.

Well all 3 of my accords r 5 speeds but 2 of them I did 5 speed swaps on so they dont need the cluch. But the 89 SE-i needs it.

Ever since the five speed swap, it will start without the clutch pushed in...doesn't really bother me though, because I still push the clutch when I start my car anyways.

Only 89s have to have the clutch pushed in, because that is when Honda did the same thing with auto lock on the automatics.

looks like you have your answer Vinny. Anything lower then 89 in stock form wont start with the clutch out. Both my 86 and 88 lx-i's will start w/out the clutch in.

if you start it in gear you HAVE to have the clutch in! that's how a manual transmission works!

Mine will start in gear with out the clutch.
Grandmothers 90 accord needs to have the break pressed to get it out of park.

No problems starting w/o the clutch for me. Though my clutch switch has been replaced with a brake light switch and wired up to control a msd 2 stage rev limiter ;) (brake switch is close when the pedal is down, clutch is open, thats the reason behind this before some one asks). Doesn't matter any way because according to the wireing diagrams the clutch switch is only for the cruise. NXRacer assumption is right, 89 was the first year to have this.

Mine used to start with clutch up.
I like not having to have to have it in to start, my new Toyota makes me do it and its annoying.

it really is a lot safer that way though, just in case the car managed to be in gear even if you think it's not.

88 LX-i. I think I've only started it twice with the clutch pressed. I usually put the shifter in nuetral before I start it, but there has been more then a few times when I did the "crank roll" when you try to start it in gear and the car jumps forward a few feet... ;)

you can't. unless you over ride the switch or something. but today you will not find any place willing to install remote start on a manual transmission car anyway, so unless you want to do it yourself you're probably out of luck.

My 89 lx-i needs the clutch in all the way to the floor to start, if you let any pressure off while starting (way before the clutch engages), it stalls immediately.

my89accord
07-10-2005, 08:16 AM
My 89 you must have the clutch to the floor or it will not crank at all.

im surprised theres that many who dont have to push the clutch in, i always figured you had to. mine you have to mash it down real hard, ive had friends try to start my car and they couldnt b/c they didnt push down hard enough...i laughed at them

Every 86-87 accord I've EVER driven (5spd) has been able to start without the clutch. I've even started, in gear, in first, and just given it throttle to start the car... so starting and taking off in one fell swoop... that's when my clutch cable snapped.

Every 88-89 I've EVER driven (5spd) had NEEDED the clutch to start. But it sounds like everyone heres getting different results than that. Hmm.

Mine doesnt need the clutch engaged to start, but the other vehicle i drive whenever im not driving my car has to have both the parking brake engaged, and the clutch to start... sometimes its quite the hassle lol

mine is an 86 dx and i swear if you put it in nuetral and try to start it without pushing in the clutch it won't crank. is there an extra circuit here somewhere? maby certain areas of the country required it to be that way. local laws are wierd you know. it's just like my wiring diagram shows the headlights without the control circuit for the pop ups. i've found mystery circuits on honda's in the past. i went to the junkyard and on ten 3gs all ten of them had that little plastic button that pushes on the switch broken off. if that button is broken the car thinks the clutch is pressed

It may depend at what facility the car was assembled/built at. Perhaps many facilities were suited to add the clutch contact to start the car, and others weren't. Shifts in production, changes in what plants were equipped to do what, and year may have also affected it?

i just aquired this car 89 accord dx carbed, the guy sold it because he couldnt get it to start he had changed the starter and battery, and just gave up after that, i searched this site up and down for problems related to the starter, and really didnt find anything that helped me, being an electronic technician i started trouble shooting i started at the ignition switch found the wire that goes to the starter cylanoid black/white it was open from where it entered the fire wall to where it came out under the passengers fender, at this point i knew there had to be a RELAY i looked all over this damn car for the relay, searched through 3 manuals, the online manual a chilton and a haynes, 2 of them had no mention of a starter relay, and thru this thread i knew an 89 DX carbed did not have a MAIN RELAY, finally i found the damn relay it was on top of a silver control box that is mounted under ashtray/stereo , i checked the relay out and it was good, so i traced the relay control wire back to under the drivers dash, low and behold it went to a switch on the clutch but this isnt the switch that is in plain site, it way up on the top of the clutch i couldnt even get my hand on it i was lucky enough to get my fingers on the wire plug and pull it loose i jumpered the connecter and , what do you know the car started, so to add to this thread, 89 accord dx carbed manual tranny, the clutch has 2 switches the bottom switch goes to the computer under the drivers seat the top one goes to a starter cut out relay thats under the damn stereo/ashtray, this almost drove me crazy.....

also, the bottom clutch switch can stop the car from starting if the clutch isnt pushed in, there is suppose to be a black rubber stopped mounted on the clutch to hit the switch pin, alot of times these rubber stoppers fall out there is the same type of rubber stopper on your brake peddle to activate your brake lights, on mine the lower clutch switch the rubber stopper is missing so mine starts without the clutch being pushed in, and the one on the brake is missing too someone befor eme covered the hole with duct tape, lol

lostforawhile
07-31-2005, 12:25 AM
if the stopper falls out the computer thinks the clutch is pushed,it's back aswords. someone needs to put that post about the other clutch switch in technical, this is valuable information.
