is the 86-87 A20 dog a$$ slow compared to the 88-89.
i finally got the motor rebuilt on the 87 hatch beater and have 400+ miles on it. the thing just has no guts. the 89 motor in my lude pulled like mad compared to this.
its kinda disappointing and hard to get used to :(.

im pretty sure the weights are close and the gearing diff is negligable.
mine just turn out to be a weak motor or does anyone else think there is that much diff?

and btw, where is exactly does the 88-89 get its half point of compression from. i assume the piston is overall taller?, as they look identical in every other way.

hmm.. weird problem.. How is the compression? How is the timing. I know you know your motors, just sounds strange. I know the 86-87 motors have lower compression, but the notice should not be that different

did you use the stock cam.... because the cam could just be worn out. might want to have the lobes micked. and yeah check the timing, and run a compression check. may have broke a ring when they installed the piston.

just something to think about....

it is the original cam, but the odds of it being 'worn out' are slim.
i did the rebuild myself in my driveway. it runs great other than a seeming lack of power. i guess i'll throw a compression guage on it when i get a chance. my 89 A20 always ran about 150-155.

Wow, theres a pic of a prelude I haven't seen in a while. Yeah, the compression diference comes from the pistons. All the a20a pistons are dished, the 88-89 efi being the shallowest. There is also a diferent intake and exhust manifolds, 88-9s having the dual stage intake and the 4-2-1 exhaust, perhaps some tweaks to the ecm maps too. Its all supposed to add up to about 10hp. The hatch is a bit heavier then the lude too isn't it?

wait a minute... your 89 Prelude has a B20A5 in it.. 160 HP... i would say thats why your accord feels slow compared to your Lude

yeah you can't really compare a stock A-series to a stock B-series. it doesn't work out. A only beat B if A is modified (preferably with turbo)

I his prelude is an 85 and i believe it has an 89 a20a3 in it. Its been a while night, any thing new happen to that lude?

ya its an 85 with the 89 A20. used to be dual sidedraft.
and sadly no, i havent been able to do jack to it. i had to give up on my big B20vtec build. right now im just gonna toss the B20 in vanilla LS form in so i can get the thing running. then turbo later on. the intereior is completely stripped. hurts thinking about it now, but it was the thing to do for a fun weekend car. the a/c was never gonna work again and....hmm... i need to win the lottery.

anyway, i know about these motors (its a long standing curse apparently), this is just my first time seeing the pistons on the 86-87 and i just kinda expected more obvious diffs.

My 86 prelude is noticeable faster than my 89 accord. The reduced weight and higher gearing more than make up for the small power difference.
