i didn't mind before, but now i cant even hear my new muffler over the loud ass engine. its more annoying than the big farty trucks, even without the lid flipped. is there anyway to remedy this? its carbureated, is there any kind of tweaking i can do to quiet it, or should i just shell out the cash and get a dynamat hood kit? thanksss

it's gotta be an exhaust leak, engines don't just get louder for no reason, have you checked the flex pipe

Yeah somethings got to be up. I've got the same muffler as you and I can hear my muffler over my engine.

So your saying that it's normal for a carb engine to have sounds that are louder than a performance exhaust?

I know what his muffler sounds like, I have the same one. I know if something under the hood is louder than that muffler somethings up.

Yea I would check your EGR pipe for cracks I know in some other cars that can make a noise difference.

Mine's 100% stock. Got a new stock type exhaust a few years ago. It purrs at idle. You shouldn't hear the engine. Maybe you need a valve adjustment (tapping) or your exhaust manifold gaskets are shot? :(

its not real loud at idle, the real problem at higher rpms the tone gets real high pitched and hell ass loud.

i know my air filter, and cap and rotor need changing, could this be part of the problem?what do i need to look for in the flex pipe, and egr pipe? and how can i fix them?

What I would do is have someone rev your car while you are listening where the noise is coming from. I would bet it's something with the exhaust like some people have said. I really don't think it's your flex pipe cuz you would notice that at idle and it would get progressively worse. Mine went out and that's what happened. I would also be willing to bet changing your air filter would help also. Goodluck.

yeah def. check your piping.
i had run over something in the road a while back, and it ripped by entire flex pipe apart. had to buy all new stuff. horribly loud.
and my engine is noisy as it is, being carb and i got new belts so theyre all *new* and loud. uhg. car sounded better before i got a new timing belt.

is the sound RPM related or speed related >??

if SPEED so check the wheel bearings ! if RPM so check the exhaust !

its rpm related, sounding the worst anywhere over 4000. i got all new catback piping, so im not thinking its an exhaust leak. i still need to check the flex pipe.

My exhaust drowns out my engine... until about 4,000 RPM's. Then the engine starts taking over :)

i have the same noise problem, 89 lx carb, the problem is not the exhaust but my intake. the black box(for lack of knowing the correct name) which connects to a y pipe and than goes to the bottom of my air cleaner is where all the dam noise comes from. the car runs great and is noisier the faster the engine goes . the y pipe on other csars i have owned acts as a noise supressor, is this so for the honda .... help me anyone if i am on to some thing or if you have a remedy for this

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the air suction valve

It has the silencer pipe that has a Y like pipe but one pipe has a dead end on it to help with noise control. Usually the AS valve should stop own when there is no vacuum to operate the valve, only at idle does it really get active.

If for some reason the valve is stuck open then it might need to be replaced.

Check for other things like valve lash and bad mounts and such.

i have 2 lx's my 88 is loud as hell andyou can bearly hear my 89 but i do know that i have like 3 hole in my exaust on my 88 so it has to be an exaust leak maybe needs a new header gasket of the flex pipe is bad

Look at the muffler bearings.

is this thread really four years old?

Should the noise be so excessive from the Y pipe from the intake entering the bottom of the air cleaner? oh by the way, I checked and replaced the muffler bearings > did'nt help any, but only replaced the front, rear bearings seemed to be ok..... Seriously I would like some resolve from this excessive noise.

Damn, I had the same problem, can you hear your valves tapping, if so your bolts for the headers might be stripped and your headers are not on tight. Mine was stripped in the head, so I just dropped an efi engine in.
