Ok...I have 2 subs in my room. A 10 inch Infinity Reference 1000watts. I also have a 12 inch Alpine Type E 600watts. Now i want to hook up one to my sony amp...what sub do you think would be louder?

10's offer a harder punch for like Rock/metal 12's offer lower bass better for Rap then the 10's. Boxes have to do with allot also. A 10 will usually take less cubic feet space so you could use a smaller box. My choice I would take the 12 non ported with the seat down if possible.

I wouldn't say louder but different if both speakers are the same brand and model but only different sizes a 10 has to work harder to hit the lower notes. 10s just have a tighter bass. I would suggest since you have both to try both in the car & see which you prefer. On the 12-point the ported end to the back of the car for better SPL. ALOT of the bass has to with the box displacement and port tuning if it's ported.

The ten will give more crisp bass, and the 12 will be more distorted, however.. And with the 10 being in a sealed box, it will most likely be quieter than the 12.

not always true my friend...i've heard a lot of sony amps that sound great....its all about the box...sure it won't sound competition, but its not going to sound like shit...

As for the subs, I would go with the ten in your case, just because i'm a big fan of sealed boxes becausei like clean tight base, not the sloppy ported loud sound. It would probably help a little more if you gave us the RMS power rating and not the peak power rating....but from what your telling me, even though i'm an Alpine fan, i have to say go with the Infinity because of it's portedness (is that a word)

I would go with the 10 and as for Alpine and Infinity they are both really good products so you can't go wrong with either. I have an Alpine HU and infinty speaks. :)

the 10" infinity... smoother sound, and i think it has a higher sensitivity... in proper boxes, the alpine will play lower notes more efficiently, but the 10" will be more defined...

also not that in proper boxes and in the car, you probably won't tell much of a difference unless you had the seatback down and were listening for the difference

10's are loud but not really by themselves. They sound best in a trio, a set of 4 will peel your back window off in a month. Unless you have a bigass amp you'll probably like the 12 better for rap/hiphop music especially for those lows (like Lil' Jon and Ying Yang, Get Low, that song won't bump as good with a 10 as a 12)
Since both are good subs I'd say try the 12 in a sealed box first and try the Infinity in both styles; or get another 10! :)

<edit> oh and get a Bass Mechanics CD or equivalent, those songs are sometimes wack but they pound, I dunno how they do it. They're the best for setting up your bass system b/c they usually include 3 or 4 sweeps and the rest weird bassy songs <edit>

Are you sure you want loud or clear? Loud does not mean good... You can have a load ass setup and it can just as easily sound like shit. I would say that the ported 12" will be louder but the sealed 10" is going to sound a hell of a lot better for sure.

if its a decent spec box then the ported 12 will be louder hands down. The 10 will sound better tho, should be tighter and hit harder.
