Since i got my car 2 years ago, I have never once had to push my clutch in to start the car, yet from reading around here, it seems that the car's not supposed to start without the cluth depressed. Also, my cruise control recently stopped working. Would this most likely mean that both the switches at the clutch pedal are screwed up? is there any way to test them?

I've never had to push in my clutch to start either, its a sensor on the clutch pedal I belive, but it does'nt bother me...my cruise just quit recently too...

hehehe.. no worries. i'm just gonna get out my testing stuff and test all the wires for continuity... test the switches and stuff. i have the original honda repair manual, so that'll help! any more suggestions would be appreciated

Accord EX -

There's a switch on the clutch pedal near where it attaches to the car that doesn't allow you to start the engine without the clutch pushed in.

It's so you don't start the car in gear and it goes flying forward.

accord ex: it's just a safety incase you forget to pull the car out of gear before starting. you're not supposed to start with it in gear, but incase you try to, this is supposed to not allow it to start. however, if the switch is broken, and you turn the key without the clutch in and the car in gear, the car will lunge when you try to start it. a good switch would stop this from happening.

anyway, once i find my multimeter, i'm gonna test all this. thanks guys

american drivers park their cars in gear instead of using the handbrake...(well maybe not all)
i always get caught in the "lunge forward" situation when leaving the mechanic's shop

and yes..my 88lxi does not need the clutch pedal to be in when starting..go figure

The mechanism that does this is called the clutch interlock. It's not found on all Accords, but I do know that the 89 LXi's have em. I'm unsure of which other models are equipped with this.

I posted a diagram of this circuit on AF. Here is the link to that thread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20075

My car doesn't have this. I tried to start it in gear when I was younger and didn't know how the clutch worked :)

Accord Ex: I leave my car in gear and pull the hand brake. That way just incase the parking brake fails, the car shouldn't go anywhere.
