ECU... not like EFI cars though. It just sends or recieves signals to the Black box and the vacuum control solenoids on the inside. and also from the O2 sensor and possibly the air intake temp sensor.
you can remove it along with the associated vacuum lines and your car will run fine, so it's not dependent on the ECU, it just helps emissions.

Thats the ECU. Its only function is to control the emissions system.

could it be making my car stall if its defective and the vacuum lines and sensors are still connected? also do you know what the heated base is on under the carb?something about EFE? i've been having a major problem with my ride stalling out constantly and i wondered if that had anything to do with it. thanks for that quick response too.(im at a library)

Early fuel evaporator... something like that... yeah it electronicly heats a grating that sits below the primary barrel so fuel is vaporised when it's cold out.. I'm not sure of it's operating temp... problaby the ECU has some hand in it's function.
I doubt the ECU can be defective... unless you squashed it or the floor of your car flooded.

I would check the distributor for problems... like old cap and rotor, or plugs and plug wires... and check for vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the carb and intake manifold and listening for the idle to change... like rpm increasing.
don't spray carb cleaner into the intake stream since that would also have the same effect of changing the idle.

Yea I don't have mine installed. Its ok to remove only if you have removed the emissions lines under the hood.

You might not want to remove all the emissions crap because here in Ontario we have manditory emissions testing on all vehicles every 2 years. But if your new car is an '86 you'll just have to wait another 2 years seeing how cars that are 20 model years old or more do not require emissions testing.

i guarantee you if you've never played with the vacuum system you are going to screw it up by disconnecting it. How do oyu bypass the slow mix solenoid? I never tried! Can you use a coil hookup?

Slow mix, is that the one on the passenger side of the car?
Not the one at the rear of the carb right?
Hey Eric did you see my 4bbl carb manifold?
