How to replace outer cv boot?

The axel shaft is too thick to slide the boot on from the other end (inner) so how do I get the boot on. Does the outer joint disassemble - How?

Has anyone ever replace just the boot before? If so, any tips would be appreciated. I know most people say just replace the entire axle, but I'd rather keep my original axle and just replace the broken rubber boot. Thanks!
