I could go like 90 mph in 3rd gear, but i don't recommend it.

i have a manual so i'm not too sure about this but i beleive that is basicaly drive but it will only use the first three gears (used for towing or going uphill/downhill). So you should be able to go as fast as you could go with a manual in 3rd gear.

Nice to see you move up sharky, using the board often i persume. Also what do you mean more pick up in D3? U still start out in 1st gear nonetheless, so it does nto matter if ur in D4 or D3, from a standstill. U see what i mean? Maybe i dont get what you're saying.

PS. Dont forget, you are posting in the wrong section again, read the section title and post the thread. General question about what kinda speed in D3 or what not is let in general section if not tech. Def not Performance. You guys are stinkin up my living room :)

when i use "D3" i get way more power in my lower gears, enabling me to go way faster from start, RPMS get alot higer before gears shift, so for quick starts ive been going through D3 and then just tapping to D at about 60 or so, just dont want to blow nothing up doing this, nothing sounds out of place at all when its done but feels alot nicer than startin with normal D, just.

Sorry for posting in wrong section, and as far as moving up i utilize these places, on my sentra boards i participate heavily, these forums give me more knowlege than anything ive encountered so far, lol wayyy better than a haynes manual.

you should be able to figure out how fast to go in D3 yourself.
I'd guess around 90mph

i went up to 105@6,000rpm's in d3.
so on your lx-i it should be maybe 110-115mph

When I had my lxi auto tranny I could only do about 90ish in 3rd and that was at 6,500 rpms......not good.

I have noticed this too.

All that is happening is your car is not shifting into 4th which lets the rpms go as high as you want in 3rd gear....same with d2....try dropping it into d2 while driving in d3......not safe but fun.

Why is taking it up to but not over redline so bad?

hahaha, so true, bitesize, so true! i would just tighten your TV cable up alot and leave it in d4! hell my lx and lx-i's both shifted damn near redline! i dont suggest you beat on that trans though; ive been thru 3 b/f i got my 5spd swap!

Well, I ripped my Automatic Tranny apart about 2 months ago, just for fun...A couple of those gears looked pretty bad. I never knew those auto's had so much shit inside. If I were you guys, I'd drive careful if you don't want to end up doing a 5 speed swap or putting in another auto.

THere is an increased chance of valve float and improper ignition at any higher rpm than the set Stock rev limit. Also, valve las is prone to happen i guess. Also, the engine does not breathe as good beyond the rev limit and thereby you are doing nothing but just over working ur engine to no useful production which results in worse conditions of engine blowup.
