I finally got my car back together, and I tried setting the timing. Now in the book it says to unplug the vaccuum advance lines and cap them, so I did. So, I look on my hood and it says set the timing at 24*btd, that seems way early, but whatever. Ok, I break out the timing light and start shootin. Well I can't see any numbers or anything, so I move the dist until I see something. I see the 24* mark and try to get it lined up with the needle but I can't move my dist. any farther. I have it turned all the way I can couter-clockwise. I am almost at 24*, but not quite. I got it as close as I could then tightened the dist and reconnected the hoses. What's the deal? Why can't I get it to 24* When I reconnected the hoses the timing wasn't close to 24* it jumped off somehwere. What should I do about this? It seems to run alright, but I don't want to f anything up. I just wanna get this thing running good then get rid of it. Any input would be appreciated.

try turning the dis slowly both ways... tha cam gear could be off as well...
did you hook the pickup to the right wire?

Edit: I just notticed you were looking at the wrong mark

here is how you do it it right.
1.disconnect the hoses andplug them.
2. start the car and connect he timing light.
3. shine the light
4. find the T mark. that is your TDC mark.
5 Align the T with pointer and tighten the distributor.
6. connect the vacuum hoses and shine the light.
7. the pointer should be pointing at 24.
8. if it doesn't your vacumm advance is not working proprly and you will need new distributor.

I thought you were supposed to line up 24* with the pointer with the hoses plugged. I will check my book again, but I was pretty sure that is what it said. Am I wrong? Now I am really confused. Someone please clarify.

The T (TDC mark) is without advance, vacuum lines plugged.
The 24 is with advance, though I never had a # associated with the | ' | advance markings on the flywheel

Auto and 5speed markings are a bit different though???

They are different slightly, but it is the same procedure more or less.
