Question About How Long To Warm Up The Car Each Time!

How many RPM's should the engine be at before it is warm and ready to go? 1000? 1500? Iknow this may be a stupid question, but i want to properly take care of it.

i assume you talkin about a carbed a20a1. it depends on how cold the weather is. if it's really cold you gotta make sure it idles long enough for the pistons and rods to expand a bit, that assures for best performance and longevity. average warm up time for me is bout 2-4 mins. carbs acts super wierd though some times it idles at 1500 while other times it idles at like 3000!!! AHH wat the hell?!?!?!

Whenever I could, I'd start it and let it sit from 5-10 minutes until it idles. It's my personal belief to let it sit running and let the ECU do its thing first. :D

It takes engine oil up to 20 minutes to reach optimum operating temperature, so dont beat on your car or bike until then. However, you can put it in gear and drive gently away after a minute if you are real easy on it. Unless its dead-cold winter. That is a whole other topic.

I have heard that the trans. should be shifted into drive or any forward gear first before you throw it into R, as the torque convertor fills with fluid faster that way. I have no mechanical evidence to support this peice of urban mythology, so hope that someone who actually knows a/t's can elaborate on this. It seems to make sense, tho.

I always drive away once I've started it. But i *never* go over 3000 RPM, or WOT before it's warmed up thoroughly. I also use Castrol fully syntetic oil, and change it and the filter at around 6000 kilometres.

well yah, the best thing to do is just to let it run until the tach drops to watever the normal idle rpm's are, mine's bout 950. sometimes it only takes a min while others it takes 10. and also it depends on if you already drove it. say you stop at a store real quick then there's no need to warm it up.

my mechanic says that you throw it in a gear before r is to slow down teh gears so theres no grind.

normally i warm up till the temp guage needle points at the bottom of the temp meter. Then i don't drive past 2500rpm till it reaches quarter way up.

I always thought there is no reason to do that to our cars unless we wanted to push the car. I just do it cuz I want heater sometimes :)

30-40 seconds... it idles at 2K till i kick it down... just let it idle high for 30-40 seconds then take off... if its super cold.. like in the middle of the winter, i place a hot plate (stove element) under the front of the car... blanket on the hood and when i get in the car and start it.... its like almost warm right away... this is like in -30* nights tho

If you tap the pedal when it's in park/neutral it will idle down really fast.

My car doesn't even idle high no matter how cold it is. I have to keep my foot on the gas for a bit until it can idle on it's own. :dunno:

I let the choke run up the RPM for a bit, and since I stand outside the car till it's warm, I periodically reach down and feel the exhaust with my hand. I you can tell a difference between a cold engine and an engine that is ready to go quite easily.

I park on hills so remote start with 5spd is a no no :(. my handbrake isn't the best at the moment..

You should fix your ebrake and get remote start...all the cool people are doing it! Isn't that right Bloodlust?? Yeah, that's right...

Oh, and like 90% of the time I won't go anywhere when she's above 1500RPM, and I like to wait till about 1000 or 1100 before I go anywhere. Sometimes time doesn't allow it, so I just take it easy.

You can adjust your fast idle on your carb at any time it's really easy. I disabled my choke so the car will not fast idle when the engine is cold. My choke was sticking so even when the car was warm it wouldn't kick down. The OEM specs for our carbed Accords are as follows...

Idle Speed:
.....5 Speed 800rpms - with A/C 750rpms
.....Auto (in gear) 730rpms -with A/C 750rpms

Fast Idle:
.....5 Speed 2500rpms (+/-)500rpms
.....Auto (in N or P) 2500rpms (+/-)500rpms

I have the rest of the specs if anyone needs them.

I'll let the car sit at idle for about 3-4 minnutes before driving her but if I have to leave quickly I won't let the rpms go past 2500.
