Sounds like mine, bullard. $300, no 5th, dead w/p, dead ECT sensor, maladjusted clutch, and now 4th is gone. Oh yes, oil leaks, of course. No idea where they're from.

no i am not a mechanic, i just know my ways around the cars. plus this is my second 3G so i know a hole lot about it. i never trust any mechanic. i do all the work myself. it may take a little longer, but i will know that if something breaks it is my fault and i know how to fix it.

bullard, getting a new trans would be cheaper then getting 4th + 5th gear replaced. I forgot to mention that's it's more then just those two gears; the entire trans itself is on the way out, my synchos are dying. The people who owned it before me put manual trans gear oil in it instead of plain 10w-30 motor oil, so it's fragged.

A replacement trans from a junkyard is ~$300. A rebuilt from most places I've seen is ~$500-600. I've heard single gear sets ALONE are almost $500 from the dealer

BTW bullared, there seems to be something wrong with your computer... all your text is coming out in all-caps =D

paid $1000 in 2003 september, was in really good condition, with working everything with a good Kenwood casset player and really good body and susp. problems were really minor, like broken switch on power window, which cost me $3 and it had 126K on original engine. Right now I have spend $2400 on it(including price of car) and I have got Black Widow body kit, 17", 2 12 Kenwood subs(1000W each) 1000w Kenwood amp, all Kenwood speakers, kenwood cd(50x4), tint, paint job, lowering springs(still need shocks) and blah blah blah...well soon to be for sale. Ohh, yeah, can someone come to my house and post all the pictures of my car on the forum? cuz I don't have enough time to do that.

The real reason i bought it was becuz my dad owned it and tho it had its problems, i knew all the things that was wrong with it. I didnt wana buy some car off someone and not know what i was getting. Now that its fixed im glad i bought it. Accords are really reliable vehicles if you take care of them

man i must have missed this thread LAST YEAR!! but neway i paid 500 bucks from the j-yard! no dents no scratches new tires and everything worked!!!! including the radio!!! but the down side to it. it had one minor flaw.well actually three. one it had a broken timing belt. then it came without a muffler. and it has a bad syncro in thrid gear. i bought it and paid 200 down and paid the dude the rest of it a week later. and then picked up the car. some son of a bitch stole the friggin hood release cable!! go figure?!!! but oh well easy fix. so i tow it home. about three miles. put it in the garage and went down to the autoparts store bought a timing belt and twenty minutes later i was flyin down rt 11 like i just stole something!!!!!! man i tell you with 145000 miles on it when i bought it in oct of 03 it now has 189000 on it and i have replaced the alt and the battery since then. also gone through a couple sets of brakes and tires but who doesnt? the car has never let me down!!

ill say that and the fucker will break down tommorow you watch!

$1000 2 years ago. Garaged its whole life till I got it, very minor dents.
New clutch, new timing belt, new tires just before I bought it (the woman's son's were too stupid to want to learn to drive.....they got the '98 Subaru wagon, also stick).
Sat in a garage not running for 3 years, but new battery, fuel filter, oil and oil filter brought it back from the dead and passed inspection.

Of course I dented it up :( I think I got a hell of a deal. 168k when I got it.
The woman I got it from is a good family friend, and I like her cuz she only buys stick and takes awesome care of her cars. She rolls in a bimmer of some sort now.

$250 - 89 LX with 182K miles only minor surface rust (none on wheel wells), just bought it June 2005. Could not pass it up with an engine that ran so strong.

Replaced auto trans, patched the exhaust holes, fixed the "winking headlight", replaced radiator hoses, connected the disconnected vacuum hoses all 6 of them, replaced fried coil and sp plug wires + plugs, pcv valve,
Its just about legal - gotta get smog tested!

Still working on:
- A/C issue (http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?t=45726) - need this with daily 98 degree temps here. Could not find any posts on this one.
- 3 windows that are in various phases of disrepair - one works fine, no rear speakers (previous owner cut wires at bundle).
- A few pesky oil leaks - chasing one always leads to more.

I got my 89 lx for free and wrecked it recently. The fender was rubbing agaist the alternator. So I decided it wasnt worth the money to bail it out of the junkyard. I only put about 1500$ into it over the years and it needed alot more.

wow, i feel like i got ripped off :(

1150 for it with 235K. The engine looked clean, at that time i knew nothing about cars.... sounded good, so we bought it. Found out later it was running on 3 cylindars, all fuel injectors leaked. TW sensor, fuel injectors, distributer, EGR valve, Fast idle control valve, thermostat, and a tune up later, she's running fine.

But we got ripped off at the mechanic....... he charged us 1000 for the fuel injectors and distributer with labor, the dist didn't need replaced, just the cap.

I hate that guy.......

$2100 in february of '05, 116k miles, mint condition except for two small rust spots which were jsut covered up with touch up paint, and a few small dings and keyhole scratches.

I'm the second owner, and have all the records of maintenance from the year it was bought to now. Runs perfect, no problems. Though i think i'm going to be contributing to it having problems by putting money into the motor, lol.

I got my 89 Se-i 4 door for free. The previous owner had been replacing the engine in it, and while it ran it had many small problems. He got a BMW and his mom wanted it out of their garage.

It came with manual transmission in the back seat (auto currently installed), an old engine with a thrown rod, several pails of random parts and bolts that they figured were not needed, and an old set of tires. It had no AC, but I got a new AC system from a junkyard for $40 and almost have it installed.

Other than still being rusty (I plan to fix that soon), I have manged to get it running good. The only problem I have now is that the parking pawl (in the transmission) is still broken. Good thing the parking brake works.

$350 for Mad Max...the 88 LXi. The paint was gone, interior pretty shot...radio was possesed, the sun roof broken, the front end completely bent. I took it to Midas or some shitty place and they gave me the front end alignment feedback sheet and just started laughing. Boy that car was more crooked than a New York City banker, but it could excellerate like crazy. That thing wouldn't die...too bad I had to put it out of its misery to transplant that sweet sweet A20A3!

Now it shall live again in the form of Hatchmaster Flash!!! Muhahahahahahahaha! Alright fellas bear with me I'm on cold medication. My brain is barely intact. Argh...that's what I get for licking a public toilet seat...damn you Mr. Eff and your bar bets...JUST KIDDING FOLKS! :barf:

i paid $300 for my lxi. i work for a tow truck company and we actually towed this guy for being abandonded at some apartment complexes we have a contract with. the lady didnt pick it up for about 35 days, by california law we are obligated to lean any vehicle after a 72 hour period. so after the 30 days we're required to keep it before selling it, my boss sold it to me for only 300. he was actually going to sell it for 1500 but he said, "hey its a perk of the job, you get a great deal on a towed/leaned car!"

so good deal, it came with 180721 mi on it. so far, after having it only 21 days i have already put 948 mi on it. and filled the tank only 3 times....man you got to love those honda engines!

1988 LX $280.00 > clean no rust, motor knocked but ran, excellent paint and body, new tires.
- also got a rusted out parts 1989 car with a "blown motor" with 85,000 miles on it

Reality:

reason motor knocked> only had 3 pistons, the connecting rod let got and smashed into fragments, only 1/2" high of the piston was left, when I took the head off it looked oK, until I tapped it with a hammer and it fell right in.
yah, the 0psi of compression kinda confussed me at first..

Parts Cars:

LOL..the dumb shit had a bad ground wire, it's was broke off,,,the motor fired up the first time...he thought it was seized...LOL

Did a motor swap and new muffler and it past certification,,,all for under $500.00...

I just picked up my 2nd 3gen sedan!
This one is a 89 Lxi for $375, 152K miles. Previous owner said it has a seized engine, but I am now believing it to be a fuel system problem. A little troubleshooting this weekend should give me the answer. If the engine is dead...oh well. It has the exact same paint color as my LX (seattle silver)...the LX has hood and trunk paint peeling off (like Nate's) so I can pull off the hood, trunk, etc if its dead. Aside from the not starting issue...its a great looking 3geez inside and out!

My LX I bought June 2005 182K miles...I only paid $250 for but needed an auto tranny, plus a few minor things (A/C charge, exhaust patching, tune up). Now I have just over $1400 in it and it runs good and strong, gets 30 - 35 mpg, and is now my daily driver.

I am now officially addicted to 3geez....and my wife is sooooo thrilled out it

Purchased my '88 LX manual for $2,400 in May of '04. 175,120 on it at the time of purchase, from the original owner. He was an older gentleman, and had taken immaculate care of the car throughout its entire life... it ran and still runs as if it were new. There are small rust spots on the rear fenders and some hail damage, plus a couple door dings and someone hitting it in the front fender while I owned it(still real mad about that). I haven't put any money into it other than gas and oil, at least until recently. Now it's sporting an SEi center console(and cupholders), better speakers(stock deck, though), better headlights, and a few tweaks. I'm starting to get addicted to tweaking it... hehe.

1000 for my 86 DX Hatch. Needs new paint, some rust spots (most rust is in the rear wheel wells), and could use new seats (seat covers make the interior look fine though). With 98,000 on the clock when I got it. Along with a brand new brake system, carb had just been rebuilt and a brand new windshield.

Paid $2000 for my 87 LX-i sedan, which I sold a year later for $2000 to buy a 92 Acura Legend. After burning up 2 engines in that car, I just bought an 87 LX-i hatch for $1500. It's in great shape, shiny paint, clean interior, no rips... engine and tranny like new. just has some suspension and steering issues.

$ 2300 about year ago with 180 000 on it.
During this year I changed clutch, shock absorbers and springs, front ball joints and all bushings. And rear speakers, and alarm system, and tires. Fixed some problems with injectors, leaky radiator, leaky sunroof, leaky rear brakes, slow front windows.
Am I happy now?
NO! NOW I HAVE GAS SMELL IN THE CABIN!!!:barf:

By chance I blew my tranny a month earlier, and I had been helping my friend find a v6 camry for the last couple of weeks, the day after we found one, his old 89 lxi(now Mine :), dropped its cat on his driveway. He told me I could have it, and for me to come and pick it up. I did that last weekend and I have it running better then he ever has. Best of all it was free, I never thought I would say it but my stupid celica is just suckin up all my money.

$250$ 87 LXI w/225K mi. Have replaced the tires, alternator, and water pump. Needs axles, paint, front bumber, corner lights, pwr steering pump, a/c, new carpet, new seats, center console. Don't know what shape the tranny is in, but will do the 5sp swap. Have installed pioneer cd player, front component 6.5's. Soon to install fuzzy dice, shocks n springs, port & polish head, cam, skunk2 intake, cai, dc headers, 2.25 exhaust, denso iw20 plugs, magnecore wires, ...etc... my first custom car. you may ask why build on this car? well i like it, it doesn't burn or leak oil, its paid for (no car payment=more money for parts) that's the main one. and this forum has inspired me to see more in my accord. thanks

$100.00 with 115k. '86 LX, 4 door auto. It has intermittent idling issues (sometimes too high, sometimes it stalls when I come to a stop), but it drives awesome and has plenty of pep (it runs a tad rich....I smell gas sometimes). It has very minor body blemishes/rust (see my garage). Could use a few things like an AC compressor mounting bolt, a new fuel filler tube, new seal around sunroof, new motor for rear driver window.

Came with a brand new exhaust, plugs, wires (Bosch, being replaced by NGK this weekend courtesy of a friend here in 3Geez), thermostat, tires.

Gettin soon: Complete tune-up/diagnostics/fuel system reworking by Honda mechanic, timing belt, dist. cap and rotor, all necessary bodywork for repainting, and two tone paint job (gunmetal gray metallic on top, black on bottom), summer wheels (I'll be checking jy's for Integra alloys), rear deck spoiler (hopefully Prelude or Integra factory spoiler).

$3800 at a dealership that accepted it for a trade in. I have the original window sticker for my SE-i. Price was $17,995 plus $245 shipping. At the time these were sold, dealers were selling them for more than list, or tacking on worthless stuff like "paint sealer" or "rustproofing" and adding a grand to the price. It came out later that dealers were actually paying off some employees of Honda America to get a better allocation.

I paid $2500 for mine in Oct of 2001 with 86,000 miles. Now 186,000, and never ran better. Just made a 500 mile round-trip from CT to Ithaca NY in one day, including some old-road twisties where the Eibach/Bilsteins/Dunlops really shined. It's a great car.

I paid $2,400 for my '88 LX back in May of '04. It sounds a bit steep, especially with 175K on the clock, but I purchased it from the original owner who bought it here in Colorado, kept it immaculately maintained(he had every reciept detailing everything he had done to the car since new, unfortunately he never gave me the records) and garaged since he bought it. So far the only trouble I've had with it are some vac leaks on some of the carb lines that caused it to die when it was warmed up at idle in cold weather. It's not completely fixed, but I think that's a fair price for a clean one-owner car that has proven to be about as reliable as Ol' Faithful.

letssee....

Dateline 1986, my families first accord..an 86 LX wow what a great car ( too bad my mom drove it and sold it when I was in my V8 stage)

Dateline 1990..a '87 LX near mint with 37k miles..from a dealer $8800!

Dateline 2000 the 87 catches fire from a PS leak (oops should have fixed that) and I score an 88 LX private party with 68 k original miles for $3000 ( btw the 87 has no rust at all, and I still have it in the back 235k miles or so) I only got stuck with it twice115k miles with a timing belt and at 200k miles when the ps fluid caught fire, oterhwise never seen the hook. Great car for my 100 mile a day drive

Dateline 2001- $1! 88 DX parts car ( no shiat) ebay buy it now, trade an old 82 fiat for the dolly job out to NJ) Pulled the engine/auto tranny before disposal(see below)

Dateline 2004 88 LX with 146kmiles from a scumfilled PA dealer who sold me the car knowing the tranny was bad-$1500 ( was a one owner car), cost me $400 to ship it from Pittsburgh ( could have sworn the ebay auction said Philidelphia). Auto Tranny breaks at 164k and then the windshield cracks. My wife got one good summer out of it and the a/c worked good. I've been stripping that car ever since ( body was good) I figure I learned a lesson and I still have a head/carb in good shape and some other expensive hard to find bits at my disposal

Dateline 2005 Ebay 86 LX-i with 135k original miles ( ebay buy now $305), owner had a secret compatment in the rear armrest filled with all the receipts and a leather case that had what looked like a small bag of heroin and some hypodermic needles ( ick!) Car had a brand new set of michelins with 200 miles on them(cost was $425 mounted and balanced with all new lugnuts) Luckily I'm not arrested when the car is delivered, that dealer took the $1 car away as a favor( was getting moldy and had been stripped clean he was real interested in the title for some reason ( :0)). This car starts one one shot no mater how long it's been sitting..body and interior rough, but the PA car promises an interior someday, I soooo wantd an LX-i with a factory sunroof.

Dateline 2007, I can't get my daily driver ( 240k miles now) to pass NJ inspection, so I snag from craig's list an 88 LX with 200k miles in decent shape for $900, fix a broken vac line and it runs like a charm. Thee folks put over $600 into the driver side power window and it is about to fail again (rubbing on the door frame I guess) Car was naer mint on the interior, but it's blue..so I won't keep for too long...still looking for a sweet LXi now that I have some breathing room.

njpeter, your a hard core 3geezer, much respect.

$800- DX I bought it from a guy who wanted me to fix the carb problem. He had two other Honda's so I made him an offer for the car. The carb never acted up on me for two weeks then, oh man did it ever cut up on me. AC did not work, and I drove the car about three months and the head gasket blew. The way it was cutting up I thought it jumped timing. The car never ran hot, but I did wind it out pretty good a few days before it happened. It only had about 6000 miles on the previous head job. Have a lot of service papers on the car and a log book of oil changes.
I did weber conversion, head job, changed out a bunch of oil seals at 301K miles
The car had 289K miles on it when I got it, now it has 308K

Actually SE-i was the top of the line in 88-89. Accords now like a base model is $19,000.

True the SE-i was the top in 89, but because we bought it so early in the model year (calendar year 88) the se-i wasn't availible yet. My dad probably would have gotten the SE-i if they'd had any at the dealership at the time. and how much would a loaded accord cost these days? something comperable to an LX-i?

Yeah I have some pics of when it was still an automatic. Since these pics I've converted it to a 5 speed and replaced the engine. Not sure exactly how many miles the engine has on it, probably about 160000 but I'm not sure. The last engine didn't really need to be replaced but leaked oil in 3 places so i figured why not while i was replacing the tranny. but anyways the odometer is still the same so it reads how many miles are on the chassis. about 250000 now. here's a link to the pics:

Mine's a 1986 Accord 2.0Si Sedan

Paid about US$1080 with approx 55,000 miles on it.

Condition is really good, but the auto makes a bit of a thud between 1st and 2nd, the air con doesn't work and the heater fan only works on high. Nothing too serious but I'm on the lookout for a 5 speed twin cam donor car :D

Traded a '94 Explorer with slipping automatic transmission straight across for it at a car dealer. The tranny would only slip when hot so I let the truck cool down before taking it in for them to test drive. Sucks to be whoever bought it. I bought my '86 Accord LX-i w/ 5 Speed for $1,100. 4 Door Sedan sitting on 17" Tenzo's. Car has working A/C, moonroof, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, power antenna (need new antenna). Seller claimed it has a rebuilt engine with 80,000 miles on the rebuild. The engine inside is very clean - but it has a very very minor oil leak (oil never hits the ground and the car doesn't burn the oil). Since the last oil change 1 month ago I haven't had to add oil. Everything on the car works great. But it does this wierd thing until it's warmed up. It idles normal on cold startup (1500 RPM's), but if I don't let it warm up for 10 minutes then when I come to a stop the idle bounces between 500rpms and 800rpms (and it shakes) it does this a few times usually shaking a little harder and then the idle self adjusts and normalizes out. This isn't a big deal to me. The wheels and tires make the car worth the $1,100. Otherwise I would have only paid $900 for the car.

Work for a garage and the customer was SUPER pissed off at the accord's "quirkiness" that he came in one day (after spending a couple thousand dollars) and wanted it sent to the scrap yard - the boss was gonna junk it, i had been eyeing the car for a while and jumped on it. Landed me a free car with a brand new front end, new brakes, a panasonic 12-disc changer, two brand new goodyear tires...

I assume it needs one new fuel injector, and has that annoying coolant leak...

not a bad deal, eh?

Paid 400$ for my 88 LX. Needed a battery. Probably could have gotten it for cheaper but I bought it from a friend that really needed the money. It was a better deal than loaning him the money and he wanted the car gone. I replaced the battery and gave it a minor tuneup, then left it sit for 1-1/2yrs:banghead:. When the DD hurt itself again I pulled it out and had to replace alternator. Some previous owner had replaced the fuse for the cooling fan with the wrong amp fuse which lead to overheating issue. I replaced fuse and the missing relay and the cooling issue is fixed, unfortunatley not before the head was damaged. 100$ for head from j/y and she runs pretty well.
