If you have carb it's normal.....if you have efil.....ummmmm you might have a problem.

it's an 87 lxi sedan. when i start it, the RPMs go to between 3 and 4 thousand, and stay there for a while until the car starts going. i don't know what's up with it

are you sure, sounds like a carb and a beaten up one at that, it's definitely a problem for fuel injectors, in a perfect world they should never do waht youre describing.

ok lets look for a few things:
1. look under the driver seat, from behind to locate the ECU. pop the small plastic window, start the car and count how many times does the red light blinks.

2. does it do it only when the car cold or does it do it everytime you start?

3. what have you done to your car lately?

1. I'll do that.

2. Yes, it only does it when it's been sitting there for several hours. But when I go driving, come back for a minute, then start out again, it doesn't.

3. Nothing. I'm taking it to the shop monday I hope

engine is cold, start it and the revs will go up anywhere between 2k and 4k until the engine warms up and then it drops to normal around 700-1100, i thought this was normal?

my nissan pulsar did that, it had a plug in the vacumm line. it was for emissions, so for a while, it was unplugged. but when i rebuilt the carb, i replaced the vacumm lines.

normal for carb not efi, but 4k is too high still.

dude had that problem... kinda.. it would think that it may be for fast idle valve that little thing on the back of your intake manifold that is shaped like an egg from the top and has 2 phillips screws in it... it can wreak havok on your cars idle speed before it warms up, try replacin that with a junkyard model or take it out and try cleaning it out

mine goes to about 2500
so fi cars dont have the high rev warmup thing?

no, because there fuel injected. Carbs are wierd and have problems like this stuff

There's still a fast idle on the fuel injected cars for warming up, it's not all that high though, usually around 1,200 RPM.

mine revs up to 2500 if it really cold but usually around 2000rpm for mine.

Is the throttle cable stuck? what is your idle rpms?

I'm pretty sure the fast idle on the FI cars shouldn't be above at most about 1,500 RPM. The idle on the FI cars isn't controlled by throttle position, but rather by different vacuum controls and the ECU, so I would rule out a sticking throttle cable. You may need to adjust the fast idle control valve by turning the screw atop your throttle body, or your fast idle silenoid may be damaged. I would try adjusting the idle control screw first. Get like a Chiltons manual or something if you don't already have one to get the specifics on how to do it.
