Ok so i heard from 2 or 3 different mechanics that if you disconnect your power steering, you gain horse power...Does anyone know if this is true?

your answer not much, but try it for yourself not hard to remove the belt, just leave the pump on cuz it weighs like 4 lbs and it's not much of a weight reduction...plus you can put the belt back on easy. people say it makes the car handles better, but i haven't noticed in any of the 3 cars i've driven. i gots me some powersteering and it's a breeze, but you just have to try it for yourself and see if you like it.

i don't think this belongs in "performance" tho. lmao.

well you should gain power since it's does rob energy from the engine. As for handeling goes I like how the car feels with no power steeing, you get a much better feel of the road. Then if you are in parking lots and what not it can be a pain.

doesn't the ps fluid leak out if you just disconnect the belt? i wanted to disconnect mine, but decided against it - i like the way she handles now.

i think the p/s belt removal is better than the a/c belt removal. if you think about it, the a/c compressor is pretty free turning off because its not clutched in when its off. now, the p/s is always heavy to turn since it doesnt clutch in and out. i think i'm taking mine off because the pos doesnt even work anyway!

no it doesn't, leave the pump inlet and outlet hose connect with the pump and all intact, it won't leak.

Remove the belt and you WILL notice a hp differance! It will take abot .250 off your quarter mile time or even .500 off.

has anyone ever thought about doin somthing where you can turn your powersteering off and on, like somthing that make the belt idle when its atached to the engine, or even somthing that can take the belt on and off?

the device that does this would add weight and use power..
and the object is to lose weight and gain power

make it out of titanium then, lol, my dad works at a titanium shop, its called sierra alloys, they make parts for jets, how cool would that be?

If you have a street car, its not at all worth it. Keep the power steering.

i think this is a big part of it..you take the belt off and expect more power...so your mind makes you think you feel it..im not saying you dont get some though

yea well heres the deal...my pump is leaking thru the top lid, so my friend looked at it and when we fixed some other stuff, he added fluid and then everything worked fine. He asked me if i wanted to try it without power steering to keep from using the pump (which is leaking) so he took the belt off and i said "i can wait a little bit before i go to non power steering" so when he tried putting the belt back on he over tightened the Power Steering Adjuster bolt and it broke...so as of now i am not even worrying about it all but i did hear that it gives u somewhat of an HP advantage.

The power steering pump really isnt putting much load on the engine when you're not turning the steering wheel.

I'm gonna do it to the convertable, she's already lost the vacuum lines and the roof....a little more off of her couldn't hurt and my old crx had no power steering, you get used to it after a while.

no power steering is more of a control upgrade than an HP upgrade. it does help with hard cornering because it gives you a better idea of what the wheels are doing and gives you more precise controls. i have to say, though, the power steering in our cars is pretty precise. i wouldn't pull the power steering unless you were really anal about control like me

i dont see how people feel a boost removing the ac belt! if its functioning properly it should be turning with no resistance unless the A/C is engauged then the cluctch kicks in, all i know is whne the ac isnt on i can spin the A/C pulley wheel with my pinkey!

Yes, my testing showed me a 2 tenth better time with the ps belt off, so yes it does cost power but id rather have it then not... Driving the car everyday is PITA witout it
