i was starting up my 88 lx the other day and i let my friend sit in the drivers seat and he has some serious ADD, and he was messing around and we were just sitting there and he put it from neutral to first gear with out using the clutch, there has to be something wrong there, what could it be?

there shouldn't be anything wrong with pulling it out of gear w/out using the clutch.

yeah, thats pretty normal. i think newer cars manual tranny's have locking mechanisms to where it wont move with out depressing the clutch or brake pedal or both together. i know i've taken a few 3gees outta gear without pressing the clutch, lots of other cars too come to think of it.

was the engine running when he was shifting?

no, i dont think it was running, cause he was trying to get moving, and kept stalling, and when it stalled is when he put it from first to neutral.

So the car wasn't running when you were pulling it in and out of gear just sitting there? If thats the case then thats perfectly normal...

Actually if you can time the rpm right you can shift without a clutch. At least on my old chevette I could. It's hitting the rpm just right thats the bitch.
