Catalytic Converter

I have a question about our CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
What are the effects on punching out the converter.

1.Will i lose or gain a little power?
2.Will the car act up since its a carb?

If i can gain a little kick.ill get a body punched out.when its time for the smog check.bolt in the good one and switch back once done.

you will see some power gain, but unless you have full exhaust with headers, you won't see much diff.

That and it makes the exhaust stinky... i would get a test pipe before punching cat

I have my cat hollowed out, its a little smellier but oh well.

Im running straight pipe w/header, and I removed the cat and resonator. After doing so, I noticed a bit of black on the bumper, and the smell of running super rich. After tinkering with the carb, I ended up turning down the a/f mixture, and it smells much better, and runs way better too

Just run one piece of pipe. THese exausts come with way to many connectors. Makes for less rattling. I punched mine out, but it just sounded stupid. Not worth the effort, thats my opinion.

test pipe dude, a great mentor told me one, if you punch out the cat, you'll expirience turbulance. sound will be very rattly and annoying, you'll get the nice odor of NO and NO2, more effort into passin emission, and prolly loose power due to turbulance. bolt on test pipe in the long run its nicer. i like the way it sounds, you wont notice any power with out full out exhaust like someone said above.

1. i don't think you'll gain any power, might even loose power.
2. yes! carbs are wierd! but they will definitely not make your car act wierd due to exhaust.

i heard from a guy at canadain tire in the automotive area that unless your pushing over 180 hp or even a little under taking off the cat will mean more back pressure and a loss of hoprsepower ?

First problem, your talkin to a guy at canadian tire. I've heard all types of stories from idiots that dont know what there talkin about. I had my magnaflow installed at midas, or budget, cant remember now. And he said to leave it at that, not to change anything. If I put on a header, I would not have enough back pressure, and I would end up floating a valve. Stupid dumbass didnt even notice I already had one. But like everyone else will tell u, if your going for power, start with header, then work your way back. If u just want sound, cut your muffler off, and install a tip.

Don't hollow out the cat, if you are taking the time to remove the cat might as well replace it with something better or a straight pipe... I do believe in what was said earlier about some turbulence being created if you punch out the insides, it's not to say that you wont get more flow with a punched cat over a stock one... but it really isn't worth the effort in my opinion.

Now I have no exhaust... not exactly my exhaust plan, but for now my muffler sits at the end of my header... I'll add in about 30" of 2.0" - 2.5" pipe later on.

well you need to be able to swap out the pipe segment for the cat, right, since you have emissions... don't expect to pass without the cat.
Thats where the testpipe comes in... it still has the flanges to bolt up to the exhaust... and flows just like a straight pipe. :D

I ran the straight pipe, and where it comes time for emmision testing, my muffler shop will weld in a universal cat, and take it off shortly after. No monkey business here.

BTW Header to muffler, no pipe, thats crazy. Coodoos to u my friend. Loud?

Nice.. Mines loud too, hate the poppin noise it makes though. And my damn heat shield under the car rattles, wish I could just take that off.

Ya.im going to look into making it bolt on.when its time for the test.i want to bolt the cat back in and go back after the test.
