:help: i have an automatic 86 Lxi and i want to make it faster. i have two decisions, either nitros or a 5speed swap. the 5speed swap is gonna cost me like $900 because i cant install it myself, and nitros is around $500? i think i can probably install that myself. lets see, a 5 speed swap will add almost two seconds to my 1/4 time, i dont know how much n2o would, im thinking of a 50 shot because of the mileage on my car. can someone help me out, thanks.

save up for a b series engine and build off of that...a20s max potential are 200+ bseries potential is substantialy higher.

i don't think you will see 2 seconds unless you make custom close gear ratio tranny.

so what would be the best choice?

5 speed still the best choice. but if you save money you can get both.

Yeah I would definitely say 5 speed swap. Im about to do that myself. Theres so much more stuff u can do with a 5 speed.

Deffinately do the 5spd swap. Your auto tranny won't hold up long with N2O. If your motor has a lot of miles (over 120k or so) or it hasnt been taken care of very good, i would especially stay away from N2O for now.

Didn't Bitesize shave off quite a bit from his 1/4 mile times when he went from auto to 5spd?

hmm but for the money, i can spend 500 on NOS or like 900 on the swap. How many more seconds will it add to my 1/4 with NOS?

or in this case, if i were to save up 900 bucks for a swap, i could go buy another 3gee with 5speed for the same price, sell this honda and add a bunch of mods.

the 5 speed swap will shave approx 1 second (A FULL SECOND) off of your 1/4 time...

or drop in a teg tranny yo shave off even more. I say go with the 5speed.
Why can't you do it yourself??? my teg swap cost me $100 doing it myself.

auto 18.5, and with just the 5spd swap 17.5, with his new mods 16.3.

Let me put it to you this way, one way or the other your going to do the 5speed swap, either your going to do it first and then put the nitrous on, or your going to put the nitrous on it and when you destroy your tranny from it your going ot have to swap over to a 5speed so you don't rip up another one. I've got both the nitrous installed and I'm finishing up my 5speed swap. I never would have though I could do it by myself. But it's just nuts a bolts after all, keep it all together and organized and use that labor money to buy yourself some nice tools.

i agree whole-heartedly. either way i'm sure you'll eventually end up with both, so do the 5spd first. it's not that bad doing it yourself(well, at least with one buddy to help). just get yourself a haynes manual or download the shop manual, and follow that. it's not too bad. besides, we're all here to help ya if you need any.

dont run nos with an auto...and yeah you can probly do the 5speed swap your self...its pretty easy if u follow the manual and all. i have swapped a firebird trans from auto to 6 speed, took a while but wasnt super hard by any means.
