A miss fire can be caused by incorrect timing, fouled spark plugs, damaged/worn plug wires, incorrectly gapped spark plugs, worn cap and rotor, worn distributor, incorrect fuel/air supply, etc. A miss fire is usually noticeable as a stumble or a rough-running engine. The popping noise is usually a backfire. A back fire occurs when the fuel/air mixture is ignited while still in the intake manifold. This is a result of incorrect valve and ignition timing. Hope this helps ya.

That list just narrowed down my random misfire problem to bad timing... will have to check it out soon...

but i talked to some people and they said that my popping was back pressure...maybe time to change spark plug wires

hey, do you have an aftermarket exhaust? i dunno, thats what most people have with the backfire. also, look for what the other guys said. any of your ignition parts can be worn out, its quite common for em to be worn on old cars. you can also gain a lil hp sometimes by changing out old ignition parts, if not much hp then maybe some much needed gas mileage.
