I can often tell by sound but if you can not just start it up and or look for a hole to find a crack I start it up cold and use my hand to feel for escapeing air but I alaways do it cold so the pipe is not hot. I allready have a nasty scar from a down pipe.

if u start up your car (cold or warm) and the exhaust sounds like u blow air with your tongue bwt your lips. see what i mean? like kids do for fun. . a hold in the exhaust is usually a hole in the muffler. the rare case is a rust hole in any of ur pipes which i highly doubt.

my car sounds like it leaks when i put a load ont the engine, but i'm thinking that maybe it's my throttle body. When i start my car warm or cold there is no leaks. but when it warms up and its put under load it sounds like that "phsphsphs" sound, almost like a turbo spooling up, well maybe not, nut i like to think that. anyone else ever had this, i just had my exhaust welded too

When I bought my car, it had a hole in the exhaust. At idle it sounded like shit, you can usually tell, but when I was on the gas it sounded like the stock exhaust of an early 90's Escort GT. It turned out that the center pipe, the part behind the cat and before the muffler had like 3 holes rusted through. I got it fixed and it's quiet as hell, enough that the only way I know my engine is running is to look at the tach. In short, you can usually tell by the sound but there's the same possibility of it being rusted through the pipe as the muffler. (grammar)
