I'm pretty sure you need special equipment to make sure it is straight. Double check with someone else.

Yep! you need a special machine to do that. Theres no way you can beat it to make it perfect unless you have a computer contolled eye. The body shop will have to do that for you they can make it perfect again if it isnt to messed up.....you will pay a pretty penny for it though! If you saw the machine they stuck it on, you would go "uhm, I cant do what that machine does". Its quite a peice.

i would say, try to find another car. it is not worth to make it straight. it will cost you as much as a new car.

or possibly a GTI that I can drop a 2.0 DOHC engine into...

Both have allot of potential. But the GTI is handicaped by it's lack of independent rear suspension. It can be made to handle just fine, but when the road isn't smooth or has frequent camber changes the cars beam axle will not only feel unstettled but will not let you carry as much speed. If it had the independent suspension that I believe the syncro's or 4-motion cars get in europe, that would be different. And replacing the stock struts and springs is a must, the cars a know for being severly underdampened. Sad thing is I really like the look of the car, especially the 2002 GTI.

What does the R stand for in EX-R (and please don't say RACING)?

no there was EX-R model in US.
According to Chilton's manual this car was offered only in 1992, so check the VIN number.
the engine is 2.2L F22A6, 140hp@5600rpm, 142ft.lbs@4000 (torque little thing), 8.8:1 compression (nice for turbo or supercharging)
if you get chilton manual they have this little tables that tells you all the specs.

Their has never ever been a EXR model sold in the u.s.. Thier was a SE model. It got a 140hp engine (dual stage intake) leather, bose audio, ABS and upgraded front seats with a arm rest, other wise it is the same as the EX, except for those upgrades.

well i don't know,
it says in my chilton manual that there was EX-R. may be they sell it in Canada or it was very little production.
