I have an '89 Accord LX (carb).

I want to replace the PCV valve but the Haynes manual states that it can be in one of three places:

1. in the tube between the air filter and crankcase,
2. in the crankcase cover and
3. in the crankcase itself?

I new to taking simple maintenance into my own hands so before I open the crankcase cover, what words of caution do you all have for me?

Doesn't opening the crankcase cover break a gasket that I need to replace with a new one?

Isn't this too much trouble just to replace a $3 part?

Please advise...

On FAQ section look for Where is the ____? (guide to engine parts and location) here:

Scroll down to 5th pic item #4 is this upside down U shape hose. If you remove the hose, on the passenger side is the PCV, on driver side is intake manifold.

"Crankcase cover" is where the oil pan is. I hope you meant valve cover, for doing the valve lash. No PCV there, though is part of PCV system.
