well problem is our filter has a dropped filter support base for hood clearance... a lot of domestic carb filters have regular flat base... so even though the filter heigth is the same for both... ours will sit lower because of the dip.
that aside... holes in the base of the filter box can be made to occomodate the 2 air bleed valves...
one hose, which is the hose that goes to the hot air door diaphragm that sits on top of the intake snorkle that sticks out of the main fitler box, will not be used.
out base carb opening is 3.5" aproximate measurement... a lot of dometis use a 4" opening or around there...
If you find one in the right size you'll have to make sure it doesn't interfere with the float adjustment screw on the right and also the choke linkages that are on the left.
If it meets all those requirements then you're good to go... also remember that the hood tilts so what clears the hood near the firewall may hit the hood up near the valve cover...
I've used a few domestic filters, but I opted to cut hole in the hood to make room for them.
you can always use the stock air box and trim off the metal walls to expose the fitler... then buy a K&N to replace the paper filter.

i shoulda guessed youd be the first to make a reply...thanks man.
i still know nothing aobut carbs or the airbox so that first post of yours was way out there....can you bring it to lamens terms or direct me to some place that will give me some idea as to the inportant parts of the carb system that i should know aobut. i really wish it wasnt such a pain in the ass to EFI my car, cause its almost as much a pain in the ass working on any sort of intake issue/idea on this car as it is to try and fix a domestic car.
wow i looked through the link you left an its like looking at anceint japanese scrawled parchment. im lost. i just want an open element filter.

Wait a sec... you have an 85?
oops, i forgot to mention that...i think thatll be my sig.
i actually found that same filter box from the 4g civic that is in your link. i contemplated getting it because i bet i could make it work as a snorkel device. (me and my partner the dremel work well together) the only reason i didnt get it was because i didnt know what to do about all the crazy stuff thats attached inside my stock filter box.
