I changed my oil about two weeks ago and I keep getting the oil light coming on for a couple of moments when I start the car. I checked the oil and found out I have about a quarter inch too much oil.

How bad is this? Is there anything I can do about it, other than jacking it up and draining the oil with the drain plug screw?

Thanks

you should drain it if there is too much or else you might spring a leak.

THE OIL LIGHT IS SUPPOSED TO COME ON WHEN YOU FIRST START THE CAR, YOU CAN ALWAYS DRAIN A BIT OUT BUT IT SHOULDN'T CAUSE TOO MUCH TROUBLE IF IT'S AS LITTLE AS YOU SAY

I think 4 quarts is good for our engines. If you have more or less, then there will be problems.

it's a metric measure so you only need 3.5 quarts

I think I ended up putting in all 4 quarts that I bought. Should I drive it hard to burn off the extra, or would that be the worst thing I could do?

I really don't want to go to all the trouble of draining some. Me = lazy

I once put too much oil in my car because I was tired, fustrated and in a rush. It was so bad that after I drove about 1 mile, smoke was pouring from under the hood and from around the bumper and trunk. I pulled over and kept the engine running so that it would burn out. I was nervous, although I was laughing and my girl was laughing because she knew that I knew better. (Always make sure that your mate has a sense of humor)

First off....don't worry about a quarter inch...Now if it is twice above the line then what it is suppose to be then you have way too much (a little over a quart). Two things it could do. 1. Blow a seal...probably the oil pan gasket. or 2. Be so much the crank is submerged and it starts foaming and you actually lose more lubrication than if it was 2 quarts low. So more is not always better..

Personaly I would chance the oil again. Why would there be a limit line if you weren't supposed to follow it. But hey thats just me.

Drive your car...... don't worry about a little extra oil. Don't beat your car just because you put to much oil in, it won't burn off like you want it to. Don't change your oil again, that's a waste of time, money, and resources. Drive your car.

A friend of mine blew his engine because he had too much oil.. but in this case it isn't much at all.. and a car this old is bound to burn it with a quickness.. don't stress it.

to much oil is so bad for the engine !! i repeat so bad ! you may develope a leak , ( at the oil seals for example )
drain the extra !!but it has nothing to do with the light !
