why would you want to advance your timing?
advancing timing may give you 1-2 Hp if that. it all depends on condition of your engine. advancing timing won't help ya when it comes to performance on stock motor.
do your self a huge favor, and stop messing with motor. unless you actually bought some perfomance parts like header, new camshaft, and so on and on.

You don't advance the timing with the distributor cap... you need to loosen the entire distributor then rotate it.

You're only going to notice a slight increase in low end, but as you get higher in the rpms it's not as helpful.

If you've noticed a lack in acceleration you might want to check into a tune up and make sure you're pulling the right amount of vacuum to the advance diaphragm on the distributor. Especially important if you're carbed.

Shep is right though, if you want power look into doing something else.
