Hmm.. sometimes... like a couple of minutes ago, the car gets stuck in park. I went to get my coat from work, come back, step on the brake to take it out of park, and the button won't go in... if I shut everything off that makes noise an listen, usually it makes a clicking noise when I'm in park an step on the brake, an it works, but when it doesn't work, its doesn't make the clicking noise.. anyone got any thoughts or experienced this themselves?

Dear Gundamevo,

This sounds like a typical cold sticking shift-lock solenoid. Its a common problem for 3G AT Accords, as well as other makes and models.

Try Removing the center console and then clean and lubricate the solenoid.

I've included some links below that might prove helpful. Good luck and write back and let us know how things go:

On all Accords, the transmission/transaxle is equipped with a key shift interlock system. The shift interlock system prevents the shifting lever from being moved from the park position unless the brake pedal is applied and the accelerator is in the idle (foot off pedal) position. If something happens to one of the components the shifter lever interlock system you can override the system by placing the ignition key in the key slot near the shift lever. The shift key lock interlock system prevents the ignition key from being removed from the ignition lock/switch assembly unless the shifter lever is in the park position.

haha.... so the only real problem with my car is the stupid shift interlock system lol, stupid thing... but maybe not, cuz the key only get stuck when its cold. haha, I jus dropped someone off, an I was in their driveway, it was in park, it was stuck, so I went to get my key out of the ignition and it was stuck, so I had to jiggle the key for 5 minutes lol

I removed the solenoid along with the bit that blocks the button from being pushed.

If the key is stuck sometimes its the steering wheel position... I just turn it side to side till the key comes out. but not far enough to lock the steering wheel or you have to turn the car back on again to unstick it.

This morning I pulled up to school... put it in park, an as usual I noticed the park light didn't come on, I try taking it out of park an its stuck of course.... so I jus sat in the car for a couple minutes, spun the wheel a lil bit, an then I fixed it and was able to get the key out... I'm gonna tear the car apart yay!!!

The problem is the switch that senses it's in park. When it gets cold the old greese that's on the spring loaded contact moves slowly or not at all. If the park contact does not make you cannot pull your key out of the ignition. The way to correct this is to take the console apart and cleand the contacts and re lub them. This is a very common problem with auto trans.

get the 86-87 selector assembly if you are not too technically inclined, it'll bolt right up and it doesn' have a shift lock, you can put it in park at 90 mph if you want.
But if you can, i'd do what mike said, just remove the solenoid all together and don't shift out of park when you're not ready that's it. Only reason for that part is old people!

Removing the solenoid will not solve the problem if it's the position sensing switch causing the problem. You still will not be able to remove your key from the ignition unless you fix the sticking shift position switch.

for real? Daaam my car is Old Skool! I remember a few times needing something from my glove box (I kept it locked) and while still rolling down the street at 40 I would put the tranny in "N" and turn off the ignition, reach over, unlock, start back up, throw it in "D4" and keep going. Just don't try to turn the wheel when u do that! lol
He's right if it locks your keys then check those contacts out, or I'm sure there's a way to disconnect the key lock feature

It's pretty simple to remove the console cover to get to the switch assembly. Pobably the easiest way to fix the problem.

lol, i've done stuff like that too. as far as i know, the 89's were the only ones that required you to be in park to remove the key, cuz my '88 had no problem.
