View Full Version : So.... B20A info?

I've searched, and done a lot of reading, and something's sticking in my head. If the B20 and A20 intake bolt patterns are the same, has anyone tried simply bolting the DOHC B20 head to the A20 block? I can't help but think that'd be much cheaper, and easier on anyone with a 5 speed, like myself.

So compare the head gaskets, if anyone's got one lying around - or pictures of the block deck would work, too, from the B20A.

Its not that simple and the B20A head will not bolt up to the a20 block. I have also compared the LS integra head and its far off so you will have to stick to using a full B20A.

Hm... ok, another question - the '88-91 USDM Preludes use a B20a, as well? But it is different from the Accord's JDM B20a? Or is the Prelude B20a JDM as well?

well the prelude has the A20 and the JDM B20, but there isn't a JDM b20 in american preludes... that is a usdm B20 and not worth it

Well, I'm looking at two pictures - the head gasket for an '88 Accord Carb'd (my car) and a B20A Prelude, '90. Looks to me like the bolt pattern is THE SAME.

So doesn't that raise the question of a B20 Prelude head on an A20 block? Hmm.... DOHC A20 maybe?

Those bolt holes seem to line up well. I'd have to see the actual B20a DOHC head to see what the story on bore spacing (although I'm sure it's the same) and the water jackets/oil drainbacks are.

Seems very possible to me. That'd save me from having to swap my 5 speed. :)

And as far as teh timing belt goes, I'd like to compare the crank gear on both motors. If they ARE the same, and the distance from crank center to block deck is the same on the B20 and A20, then simply use the B20 prelude timing belt.

doward, your one hell of a newbie!(in a good way) Good luck with this project, as many others have tried to make a DOHC a20 and failed.

rofl - I might be a newbie to Hondas in general, but I damn well know my way around a motor ;)

I'm going to order the Prelude B20 gasket into Autozone next week, and compare it to the Accord A20 gasket. If the bolts line up - we'll move on, and I'll try to locate a complete B20 head. I don't find many Preludes in junkyards though :(

Dude youre mixing things up. Lude JDM B20A '88-'91 2.0L 16v DOHC engine is NOT the same engine as the 3rd gen '86-'89 Accord JDM B20A and '86-'87 prelude engines.
And you're gonna have to worry about a lot more than just the bolts lining up. The oil and water passages will have to line up too. And the bore size of the B20A and the A20A3 is also different. It's smaller on the B20A.
You gotta do some more reading.

i dont know what happened to the pics but apperently he made it work. but nobody but him has seen or hear it run. im not sure if it worked or not. now anybody can throw a head on a block, take a picture and say it runs. but we got to see and hear to belive it.

Yes, I know the B20a in the Prelude is not the same as the B20a in the JDM Accord. I just want to see if I can make the head fit the A20a in the US Accord. ;)

Ok, from what I gather, this guy went the same road I'm proposing. Unfortuneatly, nothing was spelled out very well, so no telling what happened. :(

Based on what I did see, though, it looks very much feasable. I've got to get a spare A20A, and a B20A head, and go from there. :)
