Iam sure one is the O2 sensor but which one is it and what's the other one do??? Iam not sure if anyone has had this problem, but can some one explain what I have to do to change that damn thing???? THank you

Yes 88-89 LXi/SEi had 2 oxygen sensors, and both are the same. Just look at the exhaust manifold for the two plugs with wires coming out of them...those are the o2 sensors. You'll probably need to rent/borrow an o2 sensor socket to get them out.

Yes, the 88/89 EFI engine does indeed have two O2 sensors. I asked my mechanic one day the reason, and he didn't even know why. He said usually if you have a dual O2 sensor setup, one is in the header and the other is located after the cat. This way the ECU can compare the oxygen content of the exhaust both before and after the cat and adjust the air/fuel mixture accordingly.

I see 2 reasons for the dual O2 setup.

The sensors monitor 2 cyls each. The ECU can control them separately

OR

The ECU gets both reading and make an average reading out of those 2 and uses it for it's tables. This way you make sure the readings are better.

I believe the 88-89's exhaust manifold has a 4-2-1 setup, similar to headers... so each O2 sensor monitors two cylinders, just as with headers.

I just replaced my O2 sensors, got 2 for $28.62, easy to do...
